It’s always hard losing a loved one, but when a regular customer of SGPetShop found out about his illness in 2020, he had to make the tough choice of putting his pet cats up for adoption.

The unnamed individual entrusted the responsibility of rehoming his five Maine Coon cats to SGPetShop, a pet supplies shop.

What’s the BIG deal about Maine Coon?

As you can tell, these cats aren’t the typical community cats you see at your void deck, in which most of them are tabby cats.

These are Maine Coon cats. The Maine Coon is the largest domesticated cat breed that originates from Maine, USA and it sports a thick double coat of long hair.

Despite its size, Maine Coons are considered gentle giants who are great with kids as well.

Purebred Maine Coons, like the ones up for adoption, are highly valued and would likely be adopted or bought in a split second. They’re typically sold at no less than S$1,000.

Rehoming the Maine Coons

Although rehoming Maine Coons are typically not an arduous task given that they are prized, the owner was particular about ensuring that his cats don’t end up in the hands of breeders who would not prioritise the cats’ welfare.

I mean just look at those adorable faces!

If you’re thinking of adopting these Maine Coons, here’s what you need to know.

  • The adoption fee is $450 per cat
  • The 5 cats are between 1 to 3 years old

Preparing and caring for a Maine Coon

Unlike the typical community cat in Singapore, looking after a Maine Coon requires more effort.

Their thick double layer coats are better suited for cooler climates such as Maine (it’s a state in the US), where it is cold throughout the year. Therefore, to help acclimate your Maine Coon to Singapore’s weather, you would need to provide plenty of water and ice cubes, and cool and/or shaded areas in your house.

Several adoption agencies also require you to cat-proof your homes to ensure the safety of the cats. You can do so by securely meshing all your windows and balconies with a sturdy mesh as cats are curious creatures.

Singaporeans are known for their busy work schedule, but this might not bode well with your furry friend. Maine Coons particularly enjoy human interaction, so anyone looking to adopt the Maine coon would have to dedicate time to ensure that these beloved creatures are entertained sufficiently.

Lastly, in terms of grooming, their thick and long coats are susceptible to matting, therefore you would need to groom your Maine Coon frequently.

Please do not shave their coats off as it serves as a protection from harsh sunlight and the sweltering heat in Singapore.

I repeat, botak Maine Coons are a no go.
