While some of us are struggling to find phrases other than “happy new year” to say to our elders, one woman definitely set the bar pretty high for most of us.
And the heartwarming thing? She learned those greetings just to say them to her boyfriend’s mother during Chinese New Year.
Aww.
Malay Lady’s Viral TikTok Video
On 1 February, TikTok user @amirahvgi shared a video of her saying several Chinese New Year greetings to her boyfriend’s mother, whom she called her “future mother-in-law”.
Aiyo, now CNY, not yet Valentine’s Day yet leh!
Anyway, here’s the video:

In the video (presumably taken by Amirah’s boyfriend), she can be seen saying several Chinese New Year greetings to her future mother-in-law while holding two mandarins, a common custom in Chinese culture.
She even typed on the top left-hand corner of the video, “i finally did it”, and that she “[tried] really hard to memorize the phrase”.
What Amirah said (新年快乐,恭喜发财,身体健康,财源广进) can be loosely translated into “Happy New Year, may you enjoy great health and prosperity”.
After hearing the greetings, the older woman, clearly impressed, took the mandarins Amirah and gave her a red packet while wishing her well for the year ahead as well.
She even told her, “You are the best ah, okay?”
Awwwwww.
You sure this one still future mother-in-law?
Amirah’s Journey of Learning Chinese
According to Amirah’s TikTok account, she has been trying to learn Chinese with her boyfriend but has struggled along the way.
In another TikTok video, Amirah showed how her boyfriend tried to get her to repeat after him, but both of them ended up in a laughing fit after a while due to her pronunciation.
