46-Year-Old Hunter Accidentally Kills Friend After Mistaking Him for Wild Boar in Sarawak Jungle

A 46-year-old man accidentally shot his 40-year-old friend dead during a hunting expedition in Malaysia’s Sarawak state.

The fatal incident occurred when the shooter mistook his companion for a wild boar in dense jungle terrain.

The tragic accident took place on 26 May 2025 at approximately 5:30pm in the jungle of Sungai Dor, Melugu, Sri Aman. Both men were on a hunting trip together when disaster struck.

The 46-year-old hunter spotted movement in the bushes and believed he was targeting a wild boar. He discharged his shotgun at what he perceived to be the animal, only to discover moments later that he had shot his friend.

“He discharged his shotgun at what he thought was a wild boar, only to realise that he had accidentally shot the victim,” Sri Aman police chief Superintendent Dennis Bunyam said in a statement.

The bullet struck the 40-year-old man in the head. A medical team arrived at the scene and pronounced him dead immediately.

Unlicensed Firearm Discovery Leads to Additional Charges for Malaysia Shooter

Police investigations revealed that the shooter did not possess a valid firearm licence for hunting activities. Authorities seized the shotgun used in the fatal shooting for further examination.

The 46-year-old man now faces investigation for two separate offences: causing death by negligence and possessing an unlicensed firearm.

Superintendent Dennis Bunyam issued a public warning following the incident. “The public are advised to abide by the rules and regulations on possession and usage of firearms, and make sure all hunting activities are conducted with the necessary licence and permit from the authorities,” he stated.
