A Malaysian man from Sungai Petani, Kedah, lost four fingers after placing seven metal nuts on his hand.

The incident occurred on 29 May 2025 when the man sought medical help at Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital (HSAH).

Hospital Staff and Firefighters Called to Remove Metal Objects from Patient’s Fingers

Hospital staff managed to remove only two of the seven metal nuts before requesting assistance from the fire department. The man’s fingers had become severely swollen and infected due to the metal objects cutting off blood circulation to the affected areas.

Amanjaya Fire and Rescue Station chief Azahari Abdullah received the emergency call at 2:09PM requesting help to remove ring-like objects stuck on a patient’s fingers. His team responded immediately to the hospital.

“Upon arrival at the hospital, we found several fingers on both hands swollen and infected due to the nuts,” Azahari said.

Emergency Surgery Required After Circulation Problems Lead to Tissue Death

Fire department personnel used specialised tools to cut and remove the third metal nut from the man’s left middle finger. The operation took approximately 15 minutes to complete successfully.

However, four of the man’s fingers had already suffered tissue death from prolonged lack of blood flow.

Medical professionals had no alternative but to amputate these fingers to prevent further complications and save the patient’s life.

Investigation Ongoing as Authorities Issue Safety Warning

Authorities continue investigating why the man inserted seven metal nuts onto his fingers and the duration they remained stuck. The circumstances surrounding the incident remain unclear.

The fire department has issued a public warning against placing metal objects on fingers or other body parts. Such actions can lead to serious medical complications including circulation problems and tissue death.
