Bus drivers have been having a hard time lately.
A few days ago, a video of a man arguing with and verbally abusing a bus driver made the rounds on social media.
The man, who was wearing a neck gaiter instead of a face mask, was not allowed to enter the SBS bus as the driver claimed it wasn’t a proper face mask. The man then allegedly forced his way in, and the driver refused to continue on his route.
This upset the man, who claimed that the driver’s actions were racially motivated.
Throughout the video, the man kept hurling abusive terms at the driver, and repeatedly highlighted the fact that he couldn’t speak English.
SBS Transit later defended the driver, saying he was just trying to do his job.
Now, another driver has been abused by a commuter, but this time, it got physical.
Another Case of Man Abusing Bus Driver Caught in Video; This Time He Even Attacked Driver
A video of a man abusing a bus driver while he was parked at a bus stop has been circulating on social media.
The short, 28-second video was posted on the Facebook group Sg Chinese Community, and has been shared over 300 times at the time of writing.
The video starts off with a long-haired man exiting the SMRT bus 67 at a bus stop. The location of the incident is unclear, but it definitely happened recently as people were wearing masks.
After exiting the vehicle, the long-haired man starts complaining to other passengers and wildly gesticulates about something that had upset him.
The man’s rant wasn’t audible or comprehensible for most of the video, but the words “why never open the door” could be heard as he was pointing to an area behind where the bus was currently parked.
A woman off-screen, who was presumably taking the video, said: “Open the door that side lah”, pointing toward the same area.
The long-haired man then shows off his multilingualism by abusing the bus driver with vulgarities in several different languages.
He also starts flinging his arms at the bus driver and pushing him, but our view is obstructed by an overly curious bystander who’s investigating the commotion, so it’s hard to make out what actually happened.
The man then leaves the bus and the video ends there.
Incidents Of Abuse on the Rise
In the past couple of weeks, several incidents of commuters abusing bus drivers have come to light.
On 20 Aug, a few days before the neck gaiter incident, a man got violent with a driver just because the driver had the audacity to tell him to wear his mask properly.
The driver simply reminded the man to pull his mask up over his nose, but the man lowered it even further to expose his mouth instead.
And when the driver told him once again to wear his mask properly, the man scolded the driver and grabbed the bus driver’s shirt so hard the buttons came undone.
A week earlier, a passenger spat at a bus captain twice and even said he’ll make the bus driver “lose his job”.
Why?
Because the driver reminded him to wear his mask properly and reported him to the Operations Control Centre when he refused. The man has since been arrested and charged.
If you don’t like being told what to do, it’s very simple: just wear your damn mask properly, and everything will be fine and dandy.
But if someone, like a bus driver, lets you know that you’re not wearing your mask in the correct manner, thank them instead of resorting to abuse.
They’re just doing their job, after all.
