A 32-year-old Indonesian man is set to be charged in court on 29 August after allegedly trying to bring a concealed knife through security screening at Changi Airport.
According to the Singapore Police Force, the knife measured 19.5cm in total, with a 12cm blade.
Knife Was Allegedly Hidden Inside His Shoe
Police were alerted to the case at about 1.10pm on Thursday, 27 August.
The incident took place at the centralised security screening area for departures at Changi Airport Terminal 4.
The man allegedly placed the knife inside a sock, which was then concealed in his right high-cut shoe.
The weapon had also been wrapped in several layers of plastic bags and sealed with tape.
According to CNA, the man was instructed to remove his shoes before going through the screening lane.
A Certis Cisco aviation security officer operating the X-ray machine subsequently detected what appeared to be a sharp object inside the right shoe.
The man was then taken to a search room, where officers allegedly found the knife together with its sheath concealed in the shoe.
He Faces a Charge of Carrying an Offensive Weapon
The man is expected to be charged with carrying an offensive weapon in a public place.
Under Section 6 of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958, carrying an offensive weapon in a public place without lawful authority or a lawful purpose is an offence.
If convicted, an offender can be jailed for up to three years and must also receive at least six strokes of the cane.
Police said they take attempts to bring offensive weapons into public spaces seriously and reminded travellers that those possessing such weapons without a lawful purpose can face action under the law.
The charge against the man has not been proven in court.
