Friendships are important. But sometimes, they can be pretty fickle too.
You might have friends turn on you because you’re chasing after the same guy or had friendships destroyed because of a misunderstanding.
But the following “friendship” we’re going to talk about probably takes first place when it comes to being the worst kind of friendship ever.

Man Got Kidnapped By Friends And Extorted For Money
This incident allegedly happened in Penang. A 31-year-old man was kidnapped by his friends, aged 19 and 28 on 25 Sep 2018.
The 28-year-old was an ex-classmate of the victim and the two of them became close after working in the same entertainment outlet.
On the day of the incident, the duo invited the man to a yumcha (drink tea) session.
At the very last minute, they changed the location of their meeting.
However, instead of bringing him to another place for the yumcha session, they brought him to their workplace, the entertainment outlet.
There, they started accusing him of owing them RM 30,000 (S$10,000) and forced him to call his father and asked for the money.
If he refused, they wouldn’t let him go.

But The “Friends” Made a Mistake
They didn’t monitor his communications.
The victim proceeded to send the text message to his father, asking for the money. However, at the same time, he allegedly sent a message to the police for help as well.
Kind of like spy movies, but anyways.
The police immediately rushed to his rescue and arrested the two men as well.
And It Allegedly Happened Because The Friends Are Salty AF
The two men are being investigated under Section 285 of the Penal Code for extortion.

The police told media that the entire incident happened because of a “broken promise”.
“The victim had promised the suspects that if his investment ever gets any handsome return, he would give the suspects some money. However, the victim broke the promise which angered his friends,” Seberang Perai Tengah district police chief said.
Yeap, it’s not even because he owed them money. He just didn’t give them money that he allegedly promised to.
Can I say…self-entitled much?
Which is why it’s important to meet the right friends.

Kidnapping is a Serious Offence in Singapore
While this happened in Malaysia, kidnapping is a very serious offence in Singapore.
In 2014, a guy kidnapped the mother of Sheng Siong supermarket’s boss and asked for a ransom of $2 million. The boss, Lim Hock Chee, gave the ransom but the kidnapper was arrested shortly after that.
The kidnapper, 44-year-old Lee Sze Yong, was given three strokes of the cane and sentenced to life imprisonment.
