Man So Triggered That His Card Was ‘Eaten’ by ATM in Toa Payoh, He Hit it With a Dustbin

We’ve all had horror experiences with machines that don’t work the way we want them to, especially when it comes to ones that deal with money.

It only depends on how we deal with the aftermath of it in our anger. Some of us might call the machine provider, or some of us might attempt to shake the machine in hopes of sparking it to work properly.

Or in this man‘s case, whack it with a dustbin.

This ATM is Trash

In a viral video circulating on Facebook, a middle-aged man in black was seen attacking an unsuspecting ATM machine with a yellow dustbin and hurling vulgarities at it loudly.

The words used are so colourful and poetic that we can’t list them down in this article.

Another man in grey was also seen in the video, attempting to hold back and stop the man from hitting the machine, but a few blows were still struck, to the amusement of onlookers who could be heard chuckling in the video.

In his rage and frenzy, the man’s slipper flew off his feet while he struck the ATM, causing him to step back to retrieve it after letting go of the dustbin, which dropped onto the floor from the force.

The man in grey then took this opportunity to pick up the dustbin and place it back to where it was originally situated beside the staircase where the ATM was located next to.

Placing his hand on the aggrieved man’s arm, he successfully led him to the coffeeshop next door, seeming to have calmed him down.

Perhaps the bad service of the ATM really led the man to think that the machine was trash, and there was no better way than to dispose of trash than to use a dustbin.

Hungry ATM Had Eaten His Card

The incident, that took place on 19 Oct at Block 128 along Toa Payoh Lorong 1, led to many online speculations as to why the man was so angry with the machine.

Speaking to 43-year-old Mr Cai, the man who tried to calm him down on 21 Oct, STOMP reported that the UOB ATM in question had apparently “eaten” the aggressive man’s card after he inserted it. In attempts to “knock” the card out of the machine, he resorted to using violence with the dustbin.

Mr Cai said that the man was not someone he knew, and had been drinking at the coffeeshop, which may explain his heightened emotions, before paying and proceeding to hit the ATM. As he seemed to be drunk, Mr Cai stepped up to stop him.

What a hero.

The Man Was Arrested

The police commented that they were alerted to a call for assistance that night at about 9:37pm.

The 51-year-old troublemaker was subsequently arrested for causing annoyance to the public with his violent actions while drunk, violating Section 14(2) of the Liquor Control Act. He is also liable for using criminal force against a public servant, deterring him to carry out his duties.

It’s unknown if he used the same dustbin on any police officers.

Investigations are still ongoing, but the man may face a fine of up to $1,000 or a month’s jail for causing annoyance, or even worse, both. For the second offence, he may be jailed up to 4 years or fined.

Moral of the story? Hitting machines when they don’t work doesn’t do you any good – it’s best to contact the bank if such a situation arises lest you find yourself losing more money with a criminal charge on your records to boot.
