As any avid hiker would attest to, the benefits of hiking are manifold.

Not only do you strengthen your legs and heart, but being in nature can also boost your mood and improve your mental health.

The only problem with hiking is that you’re usually in the middle of nowhere. Even in Singapore, where we’re severely lacking in mountains, the few hiking trails we do have are far away from the city and typically in forested areas.

And if you happen to get injured there, you might need lots of luck to get rescued.

Man Stuck in Drain along Bukit Timah Hiking Trail; SCDF & SPF Officers Had to Trek 2km to Locate Him

A man found himself stuck in a drain at a hiking trail along the Bukit Timah Expressway near Mandai Road on Sunday (21 March).

He had water up to his chest, reported The Straits Times.

The authorities received a call for assistance at about 5.40pm that day, but even after arriving on the scene, officers from the SCDF and the Singapore Police Force had to trek for 2km to locate the trapped man.

Officers were seen scouring the area for the man. Several SCDF and SPF vehicles were also parked by the side of the road.

In the end, it was officers from the Disaster Assistance and Rescue Team who pulled the man out of the drain using rescue ropes.

The man was examined for injuries by a paramedic but refused to be taken to a hospital.

More details of the incident have not yet been revealed to the public.

Cyclist Falls Down Slope at Bukit Timah

Just three months ago, another accident occurred at a hiking trail in Bukit Timah.

A cyclist riding on the trail had fallen down a forested slope.

The man had been on the Bukit Timah MTB trail – a trail often used for mountain biking – with several friends.

At some point, it is believed that the man had fallen down while going down a forested slope.

His friends had called for help when he fell.

Fortunately, an employee from a security company found the cyclist while patrolling the area.

He contacted the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF), but they were unable to enter the park as the gates were locked.

Once they were unlocked by staff members, officers from the SCDF rescued the man and  carried him out on a stretcher.

The man was reportedly badly injured by the fall.

Hike in Groups

These accidents show how important it is to hike in groups.

This way, if something happens and you sustain serious injuries, your friends or family can call for help.

While hiking trails in Singapore may not be the toughest, we should always watch our step carefully, and be aware of our surroundings.
