You’d have thought that after hearing all about the spitting news in 2020
Everybody would get the hint that it’s not cool to spit at people this year. Or any year, actually.
And yet, in Aug 2020, we’re still hearing about people spitting at people and threatening to make him ‘lose his job’.
Here’s what happened.
Man Spat at Bus Captain After Being Told to Wear Mask Properly; Even Said ‘I’ll Make You Lose Your Job’
On 8 August, a middle-aged male commuter decided that he didn’t want to wear his mask properly.
A lady who witnessed the incident, which took place on bus service 54 in Bishan, said the bus captain walked to the back of the bus to remind the passenger to wear his mask properly for the third time.
He told the man that if he does not comply, he will have to get off the bus.
So what did he do?
The man walked to the front of the bus, with his mask under his chin, and proceeded to tear into the bus captain.
It was only when the bus captain threatened to call the police did he stop.
The man alighted from the bus, but not before making rude hand gestures, shouting expletives and spitting at the bus captain.
The commuter also allegedly said, “Do you believe that I’ll make you lose your job?”
To be honest, I don’t think the commuter could.
And SBS Transit’s statement seems to hit that point home.
SBS Transit Statement
According to AsiaOne, SBS Transit is aware of the incident.
They clarified that the bus captain had reported the incident to SBS Transit’s operations control centre after he reminded the man for the fourth time.
That was when, SBS Transit says, the passenger started threatening the bus captain.
SBS Transit spokesperson, Tammy Tan, also said that that they will be lodging a police report against the commuter.
The man had not only breached Covid-19 rules but also verbally abused their employee. The transport operator also said that they will share the relevant CCTV footage to aid in the investigation.
Bus Captains Are Frontliners & At Risk Too
In case you can’t tell, this is a sensitive time, and it’s not only due to spitting.
Several bus drivers have been found to have contracted the coronavirus, and while it was reported that the cases all contracted it from their homes, bus captains will definitely, more or less, be worried about getting Covid-19 too.
The Bukit Panjang cluster was linked to almost 100 cases and on 9 Aug, it was reported that all bus drivers are required to undergo the swab test.
This isn’t the first time an unruly passenger refused to obey Covid-19 rules either as previously, a man told the bus captain that “it’s his life” when reminded about wearing his mask properly.
No, it’s not.
It wasn’t known if a police report was lodged against that guy then.
