Man Delivering Food in Wheelchair Earns Respect From S’poreans

Every once in a while, you get an inspirational story that makes you question your own existence and what you’re doing with it.

Indeed, much like those high-budget motivational videos out there, it might even get you all pumped up and ready to face that huge entity you’ve been running away all your life from…

Life.

And so it’s with the utmost respect that I present this little story to you guys, and I hope that like me, you’ll be motivated to go about your life with much aplomb. After all…

If someone without the usage of his legs can go about it to the best of his ability, what excuse do YOU have?

The wheelchair-bound deliveryman

I’ve often said this, and I will say this again.

Deliverymen are pretty much the heavens’ gift to mankind.

Toiling round the clock just to satiate your never-ending hunger, these superheroes (without capes) are very much underrated and very very much unappreciated.

And that begets the question; if the normal deliverymen are already so heroic, what then, does that make this particular deliveryman…

Who does deliveries on his wheelchair?

Facebook user Mark Lee (not the one we’re all familiar with) took to Facebook with an encouraging post on 24 September, where he spoke about a wheelchair-bound deliveryman he encountered on the bus and the mixed feelings he had upon chancing across him.

Transcript (not because you can’t read, but to fill up my word quota):

“Pure grit!

This scene generated a myriad of mixed feelings. There was awe, admiration and respect, but tempered with anger, sympathy and disgust.

There were some passengers who are clearly unhappy by the inconvenience as they had a make a little detour around his motorized wheelchair.

Possibly invisible to any indifferent person, this gentleman was actually working. He was acting as a delivery agent for an online food order app. There laid a box of food in his lap and I confirmed it when he began to ask which bus stop he should stop to get to a particular block. While no one replied him, I flipped out my phone and checked Google and advices him with affirmation from the bus captain.

Isn’t it great to know there are people like him who do not simply sit and wait for handouts? Even on a wheelchair he can be productive and add value to the economy. This is pure grit!

My wish is more can be done for folks like him. And certainly hope the person who received the food from this gentleman is thankful. My regret is that I didn’t get his name. I will want to acknowledge him should I see him again. This happened in Toa Payoh, and if you see him, I am sure he deserves a high five or words of encouragement.

Finally let us reflect and be grateful on the things that we have been blessed with and innovative how to use them to add value to this universe.”

And accompanying the post was a picture of the mentioned deliveryman (whose face has been censored for obvious reasons):

Mixed feelings

In the post, the Facebook user commended the deliveryman for his attitude and gushed over how he can be “productive” and “add value to the economy” even in his wheelchair-bound state.

However, he also spoke of “anger”, “sympathy” and ‘”disgust” as apparently, there were “some passengers who are clearly unhappy by the inconvenience as they had a make a little detour around his motorized wheelchair.”

As an ending note, he wished that more could be done for folks like him, and implored everyone to be “grateful for the things that we have been blessed with”.

Positive reactions

Reactions off screen might’ve been poor, as Mark advertently mentioned. But it seems that on screen, Netizens reacted with positive enthusiasm.

And a student even thanked Mr Mark for his teachings.

One even offered to contact the aforementioned deliveryman on Mark’s behalf.

Although one did stray a bit from the norm (here).

But even that seemed to have been expressed with good intentions.

An honest living

I’m nowhere near impeccable, and so it’s with the utmost guilt that I read through this deliveryman’s story. Braving the storms even when he doesn’t have the best of equipment is a notion that does not resonate with me, and one that subsequently makes me jealous of him, because it makes me feel ashamed of myself.

Yet, ironically, that very attitude should also be one that I aspire to be.

And so I end off this article here, with the hope that should you ever chance upon this particular deliveryman…

Don’t need to be especially kind. Just give him a bit of a leeway, and I think that’ll be sufficient progress already. 🙂
