A Man Dies & Another Injured After Fight Near Coffee Shop in Farrer Park

On Sunday morning (22 September), a fight broke out near a coffee shop along Verdun Road, near Kitchener Road, which is in the Farrer Park area.

When the police arrived, they found two unconscious Singaporeans at the scene, with one later succumbing to his injuries at the hospital. Shin Min Daily News reported that the 25-year-old victim had been fatally stabbed with a knife. The police couldn’t locate the murder weapon, as it’s believed the suspect fled with it.

The coffee shop operator mentioned that the shop had already closed by 10pm, while the incident took place around 4am — long after closing hours.

22YO Charged With Murder

Today (23 September), a 22-year-old man has been charged with murder, while his family wept in court as the interpreter read the charge. Five other individuals, both men and women, were charged with rioting with deadly weapons.

The man charged with murder, Muhammad Sajid S/O Saleem, 22, appeared in court via video link with the other five accused individuals.

According to the charge sheet, he had allegedly murdered 25-year-old Dhinessh S/O Vasie between 4:00 and 4:08 AM on Verdun Road.

Sajid’s family has hired a lawyer to represent him. Several of his relatives were present in court, and one of his female relatives broke down in tears as the interpreter read the charges in Tamil.

The other five accused are between 20 to 24 years old. They each face one charge of rioting with deadly weapons.

The charge sheet states that the five allegedly participated in an unlawful assembly at the time and place mentioned, using deadly weapons, which resulted in the death of Dhinessh and injuries to two others.

The prosecution requested that all six be remanded at the Central Police Station for a week to assist in further investigations, which include searching for evidence and revisiting the crime scene.

The judge granted the prosecution’s request, ordering the continued remand of the six individuals, who may be brought out for further investigation. The case has been adjourned to 30 September.

Under Section 302(1) of the Penal Code, a murder conviction carries the death penalty.

Under Section 148 of the Penal Code, rioting with deadly weapons can result in up to 10 years of imprisonment and caning.
