Truth is sometimes stranger than fiction.
Or, much like its meaning, truth is the reality of things.
Halloween is around the corner, though I don’t know if that means much since Singapore doesn’t really celebrate it like the West does.
Still, I do know a few buddies who’d love to dress up for the occasion and head to any spooktacular they can find.
But some people take it up a notch. Sometimes, there are some more…mortal things that you could dress up to scare folks.
You could dress up as a ‘begpacker’.
‘Scariest’ Halloween Getup
I think most of us roll our eyes upon hearing that word.
In short, these (usually Western) backpackers beg for money in a country that they are visiting so that they can fund “their trip home” or “their next adventure”.
They usually smell of BS and laziness, you can tell.
You find a lot of these guys in Asia, unfortunately for us.
But some people like Instagram user Chai took inspiration from these acts.
With a combination of wit and simple truth, he put together a relatively accurate costume of a typical begpacker for Halloween back in 2017.
In case the post can’t load, I got the first portion right here.
“Since yts (whities) want to appropriate our culture for their Halloween costumes, I thought it would only be appropriate to do the same, and so I raise you the scariest Halloween costume of all: WHITE NEO-COLONISING FARANG BACKPACKER CHIC.”
I’m not sure about Thai culture specifically, but I’m guessing it could be a reference to things like blackface makeup being a cause for racism.
Chai goes on to describe his costume further and the remainder of his post in absolutely hilarious fashion.
“He can’t wait to discover himself in Asia(whatever that means), loves sexy obedient Asian women and rants on and on about how unfair Thai’s are towards the caucazoids. There’s different variations of this costume, but only this specific greasy pack is available this Halloween.”
I give that description a 31/10.
It’s a Halloween joke.
While I’m not so daring to attempt something like this, maybe this could be an idea for some of you bolder ones this Halloween?
Just remember not to go overboard even if it’s a festive season, racism isn’t tolerated in Singapore under any circumstances.
