When you see several police cars in your neighbourhood, you’d probably assume that they were called in to break up a fight or settle a domestic dispute.

But when you hear the sound of police sirens and see vehicles from the SCDF rushing in, you know that something awful has happened.

And that’s exactly what residents in Bendemeer witnessed on Wednesday evening (24 March).

The sound of sirens made them look out their windows, and some caught a glimpse of the unfortunate sight which drew the police and SCDF in the first place.

41 YO Man Found Dead on the 2nd Storey Ledge of an HDB Block on Bendemeer Road

When the authorities arrived at Block 43 Bendemeer Road, they found a 41-year-old man lying motionless on a ledge.

Residents at the time said they saw several vehicles from the police and SCDF driving towards the scene.

One resident shared a video with Stomp which first showed the vehicles arriving. Officers were then seen climbing onto a ledge outside the block’s second floor where a blue tent has been set up.

The police later said they were alerted to a case of unnatural death at the location at 6.21pm.

“A 41-year-old man was found lying motionless at the said location and was pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic,” a spokesman for the police said.

It’s unclear how the man ended up there or what caused his death.

Police investigations are ongoing.

Another Case of Unnatural Death Earlier This Month

This wasn’t the only case of unnatural death that the police reported this month.

On the morning of 4 March, officers found a 57-year-old woman lying motionless in a unit at Block 10A Boon Tiong Road.

She was later pronounced dead at the scene by a paramedic.

Just as with this case, the police did not provide details of the victim or the cause of their death, as investigations are still ongoing.

A group of police officers were seen going door-to-door speaking to other residents in the area to determine what happened.

What Exactly Does Unnatural Death Mean?

In Singapore, deaths are classed as “natural” if the death of the individual occurred due to a known medical illness (e.g. cancer) or a sudden stop in bodily function (e.g. sudden cardiac arrest).

The cause of death should not be from external forces (e.g suicide, foul play) which are deemed unnatural.

These two cases were classed as unnatural deaths because the police suspect the involvement of such external forces.
