56-Year-Old Man Found Dead in Boon Lay HDB; Brother Arrested for Suspected Strangulation

A family tragedy occurred at Boon Lay Avenue when a 56-year-old man was found dead in an HDB flat.

His brother, who lived with him, was subsequently arrested by police.

Police Investigation Underway

The incident happened in a unit on the 11th floor of Block 187 at Boon Lay Avenue.

Police confirmed they received a report on 11 Mar 2025 at 11:35 AM. Upon arrival, officers found a 56-year-old man dead inside the apartment.

A 58-year-old man who knew the victim was arrested in connection with the case.

When reporters from zaobao.sg arrived at the scene, police had cordoned off the 11th floor of the HDB block.

Investigation officers were seen entering and exiting the unit to gather evidence.

Around 5:30 PM, the coroner and police officers removed the body from the unit and transported it away in a hearse.

According to sources, the deceased and the arrested man were brothers.

Neighbours Report Minimal Interaction

Neighbours who wished to remain anonymous told zaobao.sg that both men kept to themselves and rarely interacted with others.

Occasional shouting could be heard from the unit, but there were no unusual sounds before the incident.

Neighbours also mentioned that the two brothers appeared to have mental health issues.

The unit’s door was typically locked, and the brothers seldom went out, which is why neighbours knew little about the family.

Huang Peibo (name transliterated from Mandarin), a 93-year-old retiree who has lived in the HDB block for 34 years, said he occasionally encountered the arrested man and a woman in the elevator.

Whenever he greeted them, they would either nod or ignore him completely.

“More than 10 years ago, their father also lived with them, but I haven’t seen him for a long time,” he added.

A neighbour living next door to the unit, Zail (name transliterated from Mandarin), a 21-year-old clinic assistant, said she saw a bespectacled man in handcuffs sitting in the corridor near the elevator around 1:00 PM.

“He was wearing a blue T-shirt and had a blank stare,” she recalled.

Another neighbour, Nishian (name transliterated from Mandarin), a 37-year-old retail assistant, told reporters that while she only ever saw the two brothers, she frequently heard a woman coughing from next door, suggesting a female also lived in the unit.

Nishian described the older brother as tall, bespectacled, and balding, while the younger brother was short and thin.

She mentioned that she’s typically only home at night and sometimes heard the older brother shouting, though she couldn’t confirm if they were arguing.

Police later removed several bags of evidence from the unit, including what appeared to be bedroom items like pillows or bedsheets.

Sources told zaobao.sg that the victim likely died from asphyxiation after being strangled.

Police stated that investigations are ongoing, and the cause of death is still being determined.
