With a crime rate lower than most countries, Singapore ranks #8 in a research study of “The Most Peaceful Countries in The World” conducted by the Institute for Economics & Peace in 2018.

It’s quite impossible for the world to be completely free of crime but it’s possible to outsmart them.

And one lady did it in…China.

Though she might not have intentionally done so.

Robber Robbed Woman At ATM

Our protagonist today is a man from China who was seen robbing a lady, Ms Lee, at an ATM in ICBC Bank with a knife in hand on 16 February 2019.

When he approached her from the back, she was startled and gave him the 2,500 Yuan she was about to deposit into her account.

For your information, this is equivalent to S$505.18. Naturally, he wasn’t appeased and requested for more money.

Is 2,500 Yuan going to pay the bills for long? Of course not!

However, upon seeing the balance in her bank account, he realized that she had no more than the 2,500 Yuan that now belonged to him.

In other words, the woman’s left with SGD$500.

Peanuts to our boss and lots of money for us employees, but anyways.

Robber Decided To Return Her The Money

You read that right.

Though wrongdoers break the law, some of them are actually low-key humane.

After seeing her account balance, the robber named Deng passed the money back to a very puzzled looking Ms Lee before turning his back on her to reveal a million-dollar smile.

Wait. Did I say smile?

Theft is no laughing matter but he managed a smile in that situation.

According to the CCTV footage, said robber then left the scene looking defeated.

Deng was later reportedly arrested by the police and disclosed that prior to the robbery, he had spent a hefty sum of money on surgery and his child’s education.

As such, he turned to crime in hopes of acquiring a substantial amount of money to sustain himself – from just one victim. Unfortunately, things didn’t work out the way he expected and the prey he had been eyeing on allegedly didn’t own enough money to “meet his expectations”.

At least he had a goal in mind and was determined to work towards it.

Netizens respond

People who caught wind of this amusing robber took to the internet to share their thoughts on Weibo. And let’s face it: reading through the comments of viral posts is as enjoyable as downing ten cups of bubble tea because netizens are the most creative people ever.

Moral of the story? If you’re rich, don’t store all your cash in one bank. If you’re poor, it’s okay to be poor. Sister K here is broke too.
