Neighbours. Where do I even start?

So if you’ve watched enough American dramas, you would know that neighbours can be differentiated like the men in blue.

Good neighbours. Bad neighbours.

Personally, I prefer the former. Good neighbours tend to watch out for you, and they might even gift some snacks when they come back from overseas. Yums.

But of course, I have nothing against the latter. They might simply prefer their own space, and that’s totally cool and all. Though of course, there’s still a line they should never, ever cross.

A line this man in Taiwan undoubtedly crossed. By a thousand miles.

Man in Taiwan Threw Poop Into Neighbour’s Water Tank After Dispute

As any seasoned neighbour would surely attest to, neighbourly disputes occur over the pettiest of reasons. Bad days. Hot weather. Can’t stand each other’s face.

Yeah, sounds about right.

But even so, most people would resolve disputes by either talking it out or seeking a mediator. Not, you know, by contaminating their water supply.

Like this particular neighbour did.

According to AsiaOne, this entire shitty incident started when 69-year-old Lin began leasing part of his home to telco companies to situate their base stations. By doing so, he was paid NT$12,000 (S$520) per month.

Not bad, not bad at all.

And he evidently thought so too, because when his neighbours, who did not know about the equipment’s installations, found out about it and lodged a report in 2017 to have them removed, Lin was livid.

Irked over the loss in income, he began cultivating a plan.

A revenge plan.

A very unhygienic plan

After that, his neighbours began noticing that their tap water had a strange smell, and some residents actually suffered from allergies after drinking the water.

However, it wasn’t until the building management checked through CCTV footage that they realised why:

Their neighbour has been dumping excrement into his apartment building’s water tank.

Between June 2017 and July 2018, Lin was spotted scaling the ladder to the apartment building’s water tank.

According to reports, he allegedly urinated, defecated and bathed in it once a month.

And when a sample of the water was sent for lab testing, the results supported the video evidence: heightened levels of ammonia were present in the water.

When neighbours confronted Lin about the water tank, he reportedly told them:

“You’re lucky you didn’t die from drinking the water.”

And with evidence on hand, the building management dialled the police.

Not just contamination

In court, it was revealed that Lin didn’t just fiddle with the building’s water supply.

He also spoilt the building’s lift control panel and water pipes in 2018.

In his defence, Lin expressed that drinking water laced with urine would not threaten a person’s life.

But the judge (like many of us I’m sure) disagreed with him, stating that excrement possesses the potential to contaminate and affect public health.

The elderly man was subsequently sentenced to 20 months’ jail and fined a sum of NT$160,000.
