What would you do if you spotted someone on the street not wearing a mask?
Most of us would choose one of the following options:
- Gently remind them to wear their mask
- Mumble “aiyoh” and silently judge them
But when one man recently came across a woman who pulled her mask down while exercising, he choose option number 3, which was slightly more sociopathic:
3. Give them a flying kick and racially abuse them.
It’s sounds ridiculous, but this actually happened.
Man Kicks 55YO Indian Woman’s Chest, Shouts Racial Slur at Her for Not Wearing Mask While Brisk Walking
On Friday morning (7 May) at around 8:30am, Madam Nita, an Indian Singaporean, was brisk walking along Choa Chu Kang Drive.
Given that the 55-year-old was dressed in a sleeveless top and track pants, onlookers didn’t have to be Sherlock Holmes to deduce she was exercising.
But one man apparently couldn’t tell.
When Madam Nita lowered her mask below her nose to catch her breath as she was brisk walking, she suddenly heard a man shout from behind.
The man, who was with a woman at the time, shouted at Madam Nita to put her mask above her nose. He had approached her near a bus stop outside Northvale condominium.
“I patiently told him that I was exercising which is why I had the mask below my nose,” she told The Straits Times.
Despite this, the man shouted at her once again to put her mask up. When Madam Nita tried to explain that she was exercising, the man became abusive.
“He then started to abuse me and even used a racial slur, I was absolutely shocked. I do not like confrontation and I wanted to avoid an argument with him, so I said ‘God bless you’ and decided to walk away,” she said.
Madam Nita suspects that this frustrated the man further, as he then ran towards her and gave her a “flying kick”. The kick was so forceful that it caused Madam Nita to fall to the ground. She sustained scratches on her arms and hands as a result.
“I kept saying ‘he kicked me, he kicked me’. I was in complete disbelief,” Madam Nita said.
The woman who was with the man did not intervene and the couple ran away when Madam Nita fell to the ground.
A kind bystander who witnessed the attack rushed to the 55-year-old’s side, helping her up and even offering plasters to stop the bleeding.
Police Investigating Incident
Madam Nita recounted the traumatising tale to her husband and two children later that day, and filed a police report in the night.
The police confirmed the report and said they are investigating the case.
According to Madam Nita, the man was wearing a light-coloured T-shirt with dark shorts and sports shoes at the time, and is believed to be in his 20s.
Scarred, Madam Nita is now afraid of taking the same route which she has used for over a year.
“I made up my mind to walk only on the opposite side of the street, even though it does not have a rain shelter. I could not understand why the man would act so violently towards me,” she said.
Madam Nita was not in the wrong to pull down her mask, as individuals are permitted to remove their mask when engaging in strenuous exercise.
This includes:
- Running
- Jogging
- Static exercises and drills for warm-ups
- Brisk walking
- Walking on hilly terrain
Even if someone isn’t exercising and has refused to put on a mask, landing a flying kick probably isn’t the best way to go about convincing them.
