Eddie Tan Beng Leong’s time is quickly running out. Diagnosed with End-Stage Liver Disease (ESLD), the doctors predict that he has about a week to live on 23 May.
However, his life may be extended if a kind and generous individual is willing to donate his or her liver.
At Wit’s End
His son, Leslie Tan Zheng Yu, has shared his predicament on Facebook as he is at his wit’s end. As a filial son, he would have donated a part of his liver to his father on any day.
Unfortunately, his blood type is A+ and his father needs an O+ liver.
It is not possible for different blood groups to donate to each other as the donor cells will be ‘attacked by the patient’s immune system’.
Leslie is pleading for a little more time with his father if someone would give the ‘gift of life’.
As not everyone is well acquainted with this illness, here are some facts about Live Liver Donation that might change your mind about donating your liver.
Liver
According to Webmd.com the function of the liver is to ‘filter the blood coming from the digestive tract, before passing it to the rest of the body’. Needless to say, it is a very important organ in the body.
Since Mr Eddie Tan was diagnosed, he has been unable to go about daily activities such as eating, drinking or sleeping.
Leslie shared that Mr Eddie Tan has a bloated body as ’10 litres of water is trapped in the body cavity’.
Liver transplant
Unlike the transplant of other organs, the liver does not require one to completely relinquish the organ.
According to Mount Elizabeth Hospital, a liver transplant is viewed as one of the best treatment for liver diseases.
The transplant on the donor and the receiver takes place concurrently. During the procedure, a part of a healthy liver will be cut off and grafted onto the sick patient.
Amazingly, the liver is regenerative. This means that it can grow back to what it once was within a few months with proper care. Isn’t God’s creation so wonderful?
Profile of donor
If you would like to help this father-son duo have a little more time together, here are the criteria that you need to fulfil

- Age: 21 to 55
- Weight: 75kg to 95kg
You can contact Leslie at 93253693 for more information on how to proceed.
Public reaction
Since Leslie started the page titled ‘Appeal for Liver Donation for Eddie Tan Beng Leong’, the Facebook community has been showing what support they can by sharing the post.
Some members of the public have also come out to give their word and assure potential donors that the procedure is safe and manageable.
Facebook user Jason Liew has kindly left a comment on the post stating that anyone who would like to find out more can contact him via Facebook Messenger or through his telegram ID @jayliu99.
We hope that Mr Eddie Tan will be able to find a match soon. Even if you do not fit the bill, do spread the word and hopefully, save a life.
