Being a parent is never an easy job.
Paying bills, managing work and family life are amongst many things parents need to juggle.
However, scarring your children for life shouldn’t ever be on that list of things.
Man Jailed After Molesting His Stepdaughter for More Than 20 Years
Saying that this is a bad case of parenting is an understatement.
A man who sexually abused his stepdaughter for over 20 years has been sentenced to eight years, nine months and eight weeks’ jail on 11 Jan.
The 66-year-old bus driver, however, can’t be named to protect the victim’s identity.
The latter, now 33, had been continuously molested since she was seven years old.
She noted in a statement that she constantly had suicidal thoughts and would be emotionally scarred by these incidents.
Years of Abuse and Trauma
CNA previously reported that in 1989, when the victims’ biological father died, her mother began dating the man.
A year later, her stepfather rented a room with the two of them.
The abuse began in 1994.
A notable incident occurred in 1999 when she asked him for help to insert medication in her anus because her mother was not home.
The man molested her right after that.
Things would slowly escalate over the years but the victim remained silent about the incidents.
She knew her mother depended on him financially and was also afraid the offender would rape her.
The victim stated that she “grew accustomed” to the sexual abuse, thinking that she would eventually kill herself or move out and buy her own flat at 35.
A psychiatrist assessment would later reveal she had symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder and depression.
Along with concerns about her mother, the victim also coped with the cases by telling herself her stepfather had not raped her.
Confided In Brother and Friend
It wasn’t until 2013 when the victim finally told her brother about what had been transpiring for so long.
He suggested locking her door despite the family’s house practice to leave room doors open.
However, he would still sometimes enter using a spare key.
On 21 Feb 2017, her mother was admitted to hospital and her stepfather molested her back home.
He only stopped when a friend she was texting called her and began talking loudly.
Her brother then told her to stay at her friend’s place that day, and the latter also encouraged her to report the offender.
She did so two days later.
Stepfather Found Guilty And Punished
The man was eventually arrested following police investigations.
He pleaded guilty to five counts of molestation with nine more charges taken into consideration.
The offender said that he was not having regular sex with his wife, which led him to commit some of the mentioned atrocities.
He was also facing financial stress.
The district judge said that the offender he breached the trust of his child, even though her home should be a safe place for her.
Even the prosecutor noted that it was the “worst case of sexual abuse involving acts of outrage of modesty to appear before the courts to date.”
The deputy public prosecutor initially asked for the maximum sentence, which was 10 years of jail.
It was eventually reduced to eight years, nine months and eight weeks.
