A 38-year-old Vietnamese man, Nguyen Van Hao, was sentenced to 10 weeks’ jail on 27 Mar 2025 after pleading guilty to one count of insulting his flatmate’s modesty. Another count of trespass was taken into consideration for his sentencing.
CCTV Camera Footage Captures Flatmate’s Lewd Acts in Private Room
The victim, a 29-year-old Malaysian woman whose identity is protected by a gag order, had been noticing since January 2025 that items in her room would be moved from their original positions while she was at work.
Feeling uneasy about the situation, she installed a CCTV camera in her room on 16 Feb 2025.

Three days later, on 19 Feb, the woman received an app notification while at work, informing her that motion had been detected in her room. When she checked the live feed, she was horrified to see Nguyen in her room.
The court heard that Nguyen had entered the room at about 8:28am without permission. He knew that she had left her door unlocked and wanted to smell the woman’s undergarments.
During his 16-minute intrusion, Nguyen performed several obscene acts. He first sniffed her underwear while masturbating, then removed his shirt and put on the victim’s bra and panties.
He left the room briefly before returning to continue his lewd behavior. Nguyen put on a condom and performed a lewd act with the victim’s plush toy for several minutes while on her bed.
After finishing, he carefully removed the victim’s underwear and replaced the garments on the bed in their original positions. He then tidied the bed before leaving the room.
Police Report Filed After Disturbing Discovery Leads to Arrest
Deputy Public Prosecutor Dhiraj G Chainani told the court that upon seeing the live camera feed, the victim felt “very distraught.”
“She was very scared by the thought of having to continue seeing the accused in the flat while they remained co-tenants,” said Mr Chainani.
The prosecutor added that she was “afraid and confused about having to make alternative living arrangements and having to inform the landlord of the flat about the accused’s acts in her room.”

The victim lodged a police report at Geylang Neighbourhood Police Centre the same day. Nguyen was arrested a few days later on 24 Feb.
In court, the prosecution sought between one and three months’ jail for Nguyen, citing general deterrence as the dominant sentencing consideration for his case.
Mr Chainani argued that the degree of intrusion into the victim’s privacy was “particularly high” as Nguyen had trespassed into her private space.
“But for the victim discovering the accused’s acts by viewing the live camera feed, there would have been the risk that the victim went on to wear these undergarments,” said Mr Chainani, noting the same risk applied to the victim’s plush toy, which she could have hugged.
For the offence of insulting a person’s modesty, Nguyen could have been jailed for up to a year, fined, or both.
