It was already well-documented before, but social movements like the #metoo movement and people coming forward to share their harrowing accounts of sexual assault have shown how traumatising it can be.
At this stage, no one can claim to be unaware of this.
But sadly, incomprehensibly, people continue to assault others just for their own gratification.
28YO Man Awaiting Charges for Allegedly Raping 52YO Woman in TPY
At 9:35pm on Thursday (19 Aug), the police received a call for help from a 52-year-old woman.
The woman said she had been sexually assaulted by a man in a building in Toa Payoh. The man fled the scene after the assault.
The woman sustained minor physical injuries from the alleged rape, according to the police.
Fortunately, by examining footage taken from closed-circuit television and police cameras, officers managed to track down the man based on the route he used to escape.
Just ten hours after the complaint was lodged, the suspect was arrested at a residential unit in Ang Mo Kio for suspected aggravated rape.
He was identified as a 28-year-old man. The police have not yet named him.
If found guilty of aggravated rape, the man could be sentenced to between eight and 20 years in prison and could receive up to 12 strokes of the cane.
What is Aggravated Rape?
Under Singapore’s laws, rape involves the penile penetration of a person, be it a man or woman, who didn’t consent to the act.
However, aggravated rape, which is a more serious crime, occurs when an offender commits one of the following:
- Voluntarily causes hurt to anyone or threatens to kill or hurt that person or any other person in order to commit the rape
- Rapes a person below 14 years of age without that person’s consent
- Rapes a person below 14 years of age with whom the offender is in an exploitative relationship with the person (even if that person had consented to the act)
Given that the woman in the case above was of legal age, the suspect likely threatened violence or caused physical hurt in the act.
Man Jailed 32 Years For Aggravated Rape Against Daughter
Last year in July, a 53-year-old man was sentenced to 32-years in prison for raping and molesting his daughter.
During one incident, the 23-year-old woman woke up to see her father holding a penknife to her neck, and forced to engage in sexual acts with him.
The man had contested several charges, including aggravated rape, aggravated sexual assault by penetration, aggravated molest, criminal intimidation, and voluntarily causing hurt.
