When someone betrays your trust for their own benefit, it’s never easy to recover from the hurt.
Especially if that someone was a close friend or family member.
Man Convicted For Raping Late Girlfriend’s Daughter
A 43-year-old Singaporean man pleaded guilty to rape on Monday (8 Mar) and received a sentence of 13 years’ jail and 12 strokes of the cane in the High Court, with another charge of sexual assault by penetration taken into consideration.
The 14-year-old female victim was the daughter of his girlfriend who had recently passed on. She still saw him as a father figure even after her mother’s death and addressed him as such, keeping in touch with him.
Prior to her mother’s death, the three of them lived together in the same flat with her two step-siblings who were fathered by the man. She is now 16 and lives in a children’s home, where she has been living since the passing of her mother in 2014.
She had never met her biological father, and thus regarded the man as her real father although her mother never married the man.
He Bought Alcohol
Calling the girl up on 4 July 2019, the man asked her if she had any plans the following day.
She responded by asking him to accompany her to a hospital appointment for her ear infection as her step-sister was unable to make it.
He agreed, and the duo took a train down to Paya Lebar after the appointment, where he pawned away a gold necklace at a pawnshop.
The money was used to buy cigarettes and two bottles of blueberry and raspberry vodka, which were diluted versions of vodka and had low percentages of alcohol in them.
They then had lunch at a coffee shop, where the girl saw that a bottle of vodka was open when she returned from buying food. Yet, she did not think much of it and drank about half the bottle’s contents.
After the meal, they took a bus ride to his mother’s house in Marine Parade, whom the girl regarded as her grandmother. However, she felt giddy on the way.
The man’s mother and brother were present in the flat when they arrived, but left shortly after to buy groceries at 6:00pm.
Feeling sleepy, the girl lay down on the floor while watching TV. She noticed that the man locked the door and closed all the windows, seemingly to hide what he was going to do next.
He Betrayed Her Trust
When she awoke, she found that he was lying beside her and hugging her, saying that he would not do anything else, but just missed her mother.
She did not push him away until he began pulling her closer and kissing her neck.
Out of fear of what he might do to her, she complied with his instructions to undress. The court also heard that she had a flashback of a bad experience with another man at the time.
Telling her he loved her and wanted to marry her, saying that it was possible as they weren’t related, the man raped her without a condom.
She told him that it hurt, but instead he continued to sexually assault her and only stopped when she said that she wanted to go to the toilet, telling him to never do such acts again.
Scared, the girl messaged her friend to confide in her about it, who told her to escape. She then took $30 from the man’s wallet, wanting to take a taxi back to the children’s home.
She fled once she left the flat with the man to go back to the shops.
She Was Guilty; Blamed Herself
The rape was reported to her social worker later, who along with supervisors took her to KK Women’s and Children’s Hospital where she tested negative for several sexually transmitted diseases.
In December 2019, she also underwent psychiatric assessment at the Child Guidance Clinic of the Institute of Mental Health (IMH).
Psychiatric reports showed that she blamed herself for undressing, and had even harmed herself out of guilt. She had constant nightmares of the man trying to kill her and complaining to her dead mother, and avoided visiting Marine Parade since then.
Fortunately, she felt better after undergoing therapy.
“This case strikes at the very conscience of any civilised society. To satiate his perverse carnal instincts, the accused utterly and thoroughly abused the victim’s trust reposed in him as a fatherly figure,” the prosecution said, fighting for the man’s sentence.
According to the man’s lawyer, his client felt very sorry for what he had done and wanted to plead guilty from the very beginning.
He could have been jailed up to 20 years and received a fine or caning for rape.
