It’s always a time of mourning when someone passes.

Most funerals are understandably solemn, the loss of a loved one weighing over everyone’s minds.

However, some also see it as a chance to celebrate that someone truly lived.

Amidst all the quiet chatters and grieving parties, some people decide to truly be themselves even beyond their final moments.

This is one such story with a happier finish.

A Wholesome Last Laugh

Even in dark times, there are those who want their loved ones to be happy.

62-year-old Irish Defence Force veteran Shay Bradley passed away on 8 October after battling an illness for three years.

On 12 October, his coffin was being lowered into the ground during his funeral in Kilmanagh, Kilkenny.

Suddenly, knocking and a bunch of shouting startled the attendees.

From a pre-recorded beyond-the-grave voice, Shay could be heard saying, “Let me out, it’s f***ing dark in here.”

His recording then asked if he could hear a priest and that it was indeed Shay in the coffin.

The mood slowly lightened and even though the occasion was sad, attendees gave in to the man’s humour and laughed along.

As the video ended, Shay sang one final line before the recording ended, “Hello again hello, hello I just called to say goodbye.”

The video has since gone viral and has garnered 8,900 retweets and 33,000 likes as of this writing.

Final Planned Prank

I’ve got to give props to the man for pulling off something this fantastic. Shay had apparently been planning his scheme just over a year before he passed, and only a few people along with his kids and grandkids knew.

Andrea, his daughter, told Sky News that one of his sisters got quite a shock upon hearing it.

“One of his sister’s got a big shock, but after a few seconds realised it must have been his last joke, it was his way to say goodbye.”

The Irish Defence Forces Veterans’ News took notice of the video and shared it on their page as well, along with another post offering condolences to the family.

In the post, they wrote, “Was asked a question the other day, it was what’s the difference between military humour and civilian humour it’s simple it’s black. This video should say it all.”

They must’ve taken it in stride, knowing that’s how their fellow brother-in-arms rolled.
