The Attack

The incident happened on 25 Jan 2011 at 6:00 AM in a flat at Block 418 in Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10.

The accused is 60-year-old Zhang Lai Cai, who was 46 at the time of the crime. He faces four charges, including assault with a weapon, immigration law violations, and customs offences. The victim was a 50-year-old local Chinese man at the time of the incident.

Court documents show that the victim was drinking with his daughter and the accused’s wife and daughter at a coffee shop near Ang Mo Kio Avenue 10 around midnight on the day of the incident. The four returned to the wife’s home to continue drinking afterwards.

Around 3:00 AM, the accused’s 20-year-old son argued with his mother after seeing her behaving intimately with the victim. At 5:00 AM, the mother kicked her son out of the house along with his fiancée and their two-month-old baby.

The son then called his father to tell him what was happening. The accused, who was renting a place in Toa Payoh, became furious upon learning the victim was spending the night at his wife’s home.

He grabbed a knife from the kitchen, wrapped it in newspaper, tucked it into the back of his pants, and went to meet his son.

The two rang the doorbell and entered the unit after the accused’s younger son opened the door. They proceeded to the wife’s bedroom where she and the victim were sleeping.

After the accused’s sons tried to open the door, the father and son kicked it down. Upon entering the room and seeing the victim, the accused slashed him in the chest and stomach.

The victim felt intense pain, noticed he was bleeding with his intestines protruding from the wound, and sat on the sofa to stop the bleeding while waiting for an ambulance.

The victim’s daughter began screaming and crying after seeing his injuries, while the accused’s wife instructed the maid to clean up the blood in the room.

According to court documents, police officers found a woman seeking help at the foot of the HDB block at 6:28 AM that day.

The accused pleaded guilty yesterday. Sentencing will take place on 15 May.

During the investigation, he revealed that he chose to return because he missed his family.
