One of my favourite musicals of all-time is Les Miserables.
There’s one particular song inside that is pretty famous, called I Dreamed A Dream.
If you perhaps watched the 2012 musical film adaptation, you’d realise that this song, while beautiful, is extremely tragic.
If you didn’t, here’s a short summary – the character, Fantine, was knocked up by a man who abandoned her into single parenthood and extreme poverty.
During this song, she dreams of the times when her life was better and also what she wishes her life would be.
One of the lines of the song:
“And still I dream he’ll come to me. That we will live the years together.”
Truly heartbreaking, isn’t it? Despite what the man did to her, she still wishes for him to return to her side.
To help cope with this, I told myself that such things only happen in fiction.
But I was wrong.
Man Tries To Kill Wife By Suffocating Her
As unbelievable as it sounds, the title isn’t a clickbait in any way.
Back in April 2018, 59-year-old Govindarajan Thiruvengadam Uthirapathy was believed to be having an affair by his daughter-in-law.
This eventually led to an intense argument between him and his wife, Ellapur Selvi Chanthenatever.
He snapped and used a plastic bag from the kitchen to suffocate her from behind when she was seated on the sofa.
Govindarajan choked her and wrapping it tightly around her neck, and apparently repeatedly told her to die.
Ellapur then eventually fainted and fell to the floor.
What happened next? Did he check on her? Call an ambulance?
Nope.
Robbed Wife To Spend On Mistress
He then pillaged his wife’s gold chain (worth $4,250), $300 cash, and credit cards from her purse.
Without even checking on his wife lying motionless on the floor, Govindarajan left to meet pawn the gold chain necklace and meet his mistress.
So it seems like his daughter-in-law was right after all.
Using the cash earned, he then bought his mistress five tops, a pair of slippers, and two gold studs, before giving her $300 in cash.
He planned to leave the country to Malaysia with her the next day but was fortunately arrested at the Woodlands Checkpoint.
Wife Forgives Him
What?!
But yes. If there was a Best Wife of the Decade Award, she deserves it.
Even after waking up from the attempted murder, she pleaded for her daughter not to inform the police, only eventually telling a doctor at the hospital where she works after suffering intense pain in her chest and neck.
She also said he has “always been very loving towards [her] and has always taken care of [her]”, and that his absence has affected her sleep and work performance.
Despite Govindarajan’s cold-blooded actions, she still forgives him and craves his return.
Does Not Know Why He Did It
Well, that’s the excuse he’s going with, apparently.
Govindarajan stated that he did it out of impulse and did not why he committed the act or even had the thought of killing her.
But according to his defence lawyer, he was previously diagnosed with severe psychotic depression and has a history of hearing voices.
Govindarajan could have been jailed for up to 15 years, fined, or both for his actions.
However, the judge gave “some mitigating weight” due to his wife’s stance, and sentenced him to three years and three months in jail.
I don’t know what he will do after he’s released, but he’d better return to his wife to love and dote on her for the rest of their lives.
He’s got a lot to make up for.
Watch this for a complete summary of what REALLY happened to Qoo10, and why it's like a K-drama:
