Everyone have their bad days and on one particular Monday, a 68-year-old uncle’s Monday blues got so bad that he decided to jump off his window. In the early afternoon of 11th July 2016, a crowd of passersby was seen gathering around Blk 410 along Tampines Street 41. Why? Apparently, an elderly man tried to commit suicide from his HDB unit but his attempt failed as he was seen hanging by his pants, dangling on a clothes rack.
After some citizens spotted him hanging by the pole, the Singapore Police Force and Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) fire engines was alerted at 3.35pm and soon arrived, with a Combined Platform-Ladder ready to help the man safely down. Perhaps fate has a plan for him, because if the rack weren’t there to “catch” him or if the rescue team didn’t arrive in time, it would have certainly resulted in an unfortunate situation.
Passersby also saw an SCDF officer rappelling down to the clothes drying rack to help free the man, before guiding him onto the combined platform ladder.
Safely rescued from the rack at about 4.10pm on Monday, he was then sent to Changi General Hospital for checkups. He was said to be conscious and in a stable condition but he has since, been arrested by the police for attempting to commit suicide.
It is indeed sad to see a fellow citizen finding no hope and deciding to end his life. Perhaps he was influenced and affected by the many bizarre cases that have been happening in the world recently. Feeling like there’s so much hate in the world, it seems like the road to humanity is narrow and far.
Not only did he not succeed in his plan to end his life (fortunately), he was also “displayed” openly in public, gathering a crowd of passersby, probably pointing and taking their cameras out. Sigh, society these days. Fortunately, kind souls got help in time, together with the help of durable pants.
According to The New Paper, the elderly man’s son was interviewed and said that the incident really shocked him as he did not expect that his father would want to end his life abruptly by jumping down from their 8th storey unit, though he did remember seeing his father becoming rather depressed lately.
The uncle was apparently alone at home during Monday morning and had used a 1.5 metre ladder to climb out of the window. Rumors were also heard from residents that the man had forgotten to take his medication hence, the unforeseen incident.
We’re glad that the man had been saved and that his plan didn’t go through or it would have been fatal. If you’re feeling depressed, please do not try to end your life. Seek help from relevant personnel like counselors, or get a listening ear from your friends and family. Think about your loved ones, surely they wouldn’t want you to give up on life like that. Even if society and the world are going through a horrible and despairing time.
