Slippers are great in a hot and humid country like Singapore, where our toes can escape the oppressive heat and stench of our shoes. Slippers are also the best way to annoy someone with noise in a library without getting kicked out.
It’s not so great on escalators, though.
Entire Leg Swallowed by Escalator
A 49-year-old man was going down an escalator in Kuala Lumpur when the escalator swallowed his entire right leg.
Now, that’s just plain insensitive, Ron Burgundy.
According to China Press, the incident took place at a mall along Jalan Tuanku Abdul Rahman on Sunday (Nov 3).
But how did it happen?
It’s that same sneaky culprit:
The man happened to be wearing slippers at the time, and they got caught near the landing of the escalator.
As a result, the escalator sucked in his slipper and his entire right leg was dragged into the landing of the escalator.
As World of Buzz says, slippers can be dangerous on escalators because of how slim they are. So, if you aren’t aware of where you place your feet, your slipper could get pulled in as the escalator steps disappear into the landing.
Suffered a broken foot
The local Fire and Rescue Department were called in soon after the incident and they rushed to the scene immediately.
Operations commander Mohd Zuhair Faisal Zulkifli said it took almost an hour to properly remove the man’s trapped leg from the escalator.
Medical personnel at the scene said that the poor man suffered a broken foot and was sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for treatment.
Thankfully, though, he is now reportedly in stable condition.
Not a rare occurrence
This isn’t the first time that someone has gotten injured on an escalator because they were wearing slippers.
In May this year, a five-year-old boy had a minor cut on his toe after his slipper was caught in an escalator at Jewel Changi Airport.

And just a month ago, one lady was reportedly swallowed by an escalator which collapsed at KL Sentral.
Basically, escalators can eat you alive, so it’s important to be alert when you’re using these death machines.
Reader: Does this mean I have to stop wearing slippers?
No, dear reader, keep wearing those comfy slippers of yours and keep those toes free. You’ll just have to take the stairs. Stairs will take you to a higher or lower floor without killing you in the process, and it’s goody exercise, too. Good for your feet and your heart.
