For the past two weeks, the number of COVID-19 cases has continued to rise each day.
While there hasn’t been a call for a lockdown or for more restrictions in the country since we are trying to move towards an endemic, several markets and food places have been ordered to close for deep cleaning these past few weeks.
The latest one to be ordered to close is Block 20 and 21 Marsiling Lane Hawker Centre and Wet Market after COVID-19 cases were detected amongst stallholders and the people working there.
Closed For 3 Days
After a discussion between the National Environment Agency (NEA) and the Hawker’s Association and the Town Council, they decided that it was best that the centre is closed for the next three days so that deep cleaning and disinfection can take place.
The centre will resume operations on Saturday, 25 September.
Cleaning contractors were seen in personal protective equipment (PPE) at around 3pm on Tuesday getting ready to deep clean the area.
Just in case residents were unaware, these cleaning contractors also put up posters regarding the closure on the notice board.
Member of Parliament for Marsiling-Yew Tee GRC Zaqy Mohamad reassured residents that the nearby eateries and coffee shops will remain open during this period of time, so they still have food options despite the closure of the centre.
Since the town council’s main priority is the safety and health of the residents and stallholders, Mr Zaqy said that all precautions will be taken to ensure that the centre is safe for everyone before it can resume operations.
Supporting Stallholders
According to Channel News Asia, Mr Zaqy said that he and his GRC team is working with the town council to offer service and conservancy charges (S&CC) rebates for more than a week. These rebates are intended to support the stallholders during this period of closure.
Both the GRC team and the Merchants’ Association are also working together closely to monitor the situation, and they will offer support if there is any stallholder who requires more assistance due to the closure.
Other Markets Have Closed Too
Marsiling Lane Hawker Centre and Wet Market is the third market and food centre to close within a week.
Ayer Rajah Food Centre was ordered to close on 19 September for deep cleaning and disinfection after the detection of COVID-19 cases amongst stallholders and cleaning attendants. The centre reopens today, according to S Iswaran, the MP for West Coast GRC.
Prior to that, the market and hawker centre at Block 210 Toa Payoh Lorong 8 was also ordered to cease operations from 17 to 19 September after a few stallholders and the people working there tested positive for COVID-19.
