A “garbage house” in Whampoa Drive had stagnant water that attracted mosquitoes, with foul water leaking to the unit below, raising hygiene concerns.

The new Jalan Besar MP, Shawn Loh, visited the neighbourhood for two days in a row to talk with neighbours and helped clean up the garbage house with support from various organisations and volunteers.

Shin Min Daily News previously reported that a unit on the 12th floor of Block 93 at Whampoa Drive had many items piled up.

The female homeowner, Madam Chen (name transliterated from Mandarin), who is in her 70s, had hoarded so many items that eventually caused an unbearable stench. The dirty water also seeped into the floor, affecting the unit below.

The new MP for Jalan Besar GRC, Shawn Loh, posted on Facebook on Saturday night, 10 May 2025, that residents had brought this matter to his attention during a meet-the-people session.

He and his team had recently visited the unit to try to solve the problem.

However, Mr Shawn pointed out that solving such issues takes time, as they wanted to respect the female homeowner while caring for the neighbours.

Clearing Operation Finally Succeeds

Mr Shawn visited the neighbourhood on Saturday, 10 May 2025, to speak with residents and noted that the neighbours were very understanding.

He thanked community volunteers, town council staff, and authorities for helping clean up the garbage house.

When reporters visited on Sunday, 11 May 2025, morning, several volunteers had already started cleaning.

Mr Shawn arrived at 10:30 AM and tried to talk with the female homeowner while coordinating with authority personnel.

In an interview, he said the cleaning operation started at 3:00 PM on Saturday and continued until 9:00 PM. The removed items filled 12 green garbage bins, and volunteers bought a mattress for the female homeowner.

Mr Shawn revealed that authorities had known about the hoarding problem since last year and had visited multiple times, but the female homeowner either didn’t open the door or wasn’t home.

After much effort, including neighbours and volunteers coming to persuade her, the female homeowner finally agreed to start the cleaning work.
