Just yesterday, the Ministry of Manpower released the list of Singapore’s public holidays for 2018 (next year). Most people immediately look for long weekends to plan some overseas vacation or some such, and here it is.
Four.
There are only 4 long weekends next year.
(note: for the past 3 years, it had been 6 to 7 long weekends per year)
Here is a graphic made by the nice guys over at ChannelNewsAsia.
Worry not, however, because we’re here to help you maximise your public holidays, and stretch that miserable 4 out into something much more respectable.
First of all, unfortunately, 2 of the 4 long weekends have already passed in the month of January and February.
You can stop crying now.
Take a look at the month of May. Labour day and Vesak day both fall on Tuesdays (first and last Tuesdays, actually), so a convenient one-day-leave on the Mondays will net you 2 more long 4-day weekends.
Next opportunity is 2 months later, in August. National Day falls on a Thursday, so take a day on the Friday for another 4-day weekend.
Unfortunately (again), Hari Raya Haji falls on a Wednesday, so unless you’re willing to take 2 days of leave, there’s no long weekend there. On the bright side, a Wednesday public holiday breaks up your week into 2 sections of 2 days, so it’s not so bad.
The last 2 public holidays of the year, Deepavali and Christmas, both fall on Tuesdays, so there’s yet another opportunity to extend your weekends with only 1 day of leave each.
That makes a total of 5 extra long weekends in addition to the 4 official ones. Fortunately, there are no public holidays next year that fall on Saturdays, so you won’t get short-changed on the total number of actual holidays. Silver linings, yo.
If you choose to take every one of the 5 extra long weekends, that means 5 days from your annual leave. Not a bad idea to be very honest.
Now go, go and buy the plane tickets before everyone else sees this and buys before you do.
