Everything About the Fire in an Unoccupied MBS Room on 10 Nov

Generally, we have been pretty lucky in our hospitality and tourism industry in Singapore, with no big issues happening that have affected our hotels pretty badly.

In fact, we can say that in most cases, our hospitality staff have been fairly efficient in handling any sort of emergency, including perhaps…fire?

Well duh, of course.

Fire! Fire!

On Sunday (10 Nov) evening, local social media pages were ablaze with footage of a lower room in Marina Bay Sands (MBS) lit up in flames.

It’s in stark contrast to the rest of the rooms in the lower floors, which were dark in the various videos.

The fire seemed to be localised to that particular room, later identified as the 12th floor of Tower Three at MBS.

We often talk about the tourist season heating up in Singapore, but this was not what we meant.

The good news

Luckily, with the help of staff, the fire was contained fairly quickly.

The Company Emergency Response Team (CERT) at MBS managed to extinguish the fire with two hose reels, before the Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) turned up on the scene.

No one was injured in this incident, a spokesperson for MBS said. The spokesperson added that no cause of the fire has been identified and they would be co-operating with SCDF to help investigate the cause.

Renovation revolution~

The room in question was a part of a block of rooms that were undergoing renovation at MBS, something which had been in the works since 2022.

In fact, since 2022, the hotel has spared no expense to attract its fair share of tourists in Singapore. The hotel has committed a total of S$2.3 billion (US$1.75 billion) in investments by completing this new collection of hotel rooms across all three hotel towers, known as the Paiza Collection.

As of earlier this month in November, around 1,540 new rooms have been completed, and the rooms in Towers 1 and 2 of the hotel have all been refurbished.

Work is currently undergoing for the rooms in Tower 3 (where the fire occurred), the hotel lobby and the Sands SkyPark.

Upon full completion, there will be around 1,850 rooms, including 775 suites, at the hotel, up from its original number of 180 suites.

We can’t for sure say that the fire occurred due to the renovations, but we do have to say that the staff have been efficient in managing the worst of the fire when it happened.
