McAfee Creator John McAfee Found Dead in Prison After Court Allows Extradition

The name McAfee is familiar to everyone who’s not a fan of cyberattacks.

It’s a computer security software that was created in the 1980s by the eponymous John McAfee, who made quite a fortune from it.

People are still using his software to this day, but McAfee had more recently made a foray into cryptocurrency, claiming to be a crypto guru.

In the last few years, McAfee has hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons, after his home country, the US, accused him of tax evasion.

As for whether he would have been convicted, we’ll now never know.

McAfee Creator John McAfee Found Dead in Prison After Court Allows Extradition

The 75-year-old was found dead in his jail cell in Spain yesterday (23 June), not long after a court approved his extradition to the US for tax evasion.

His death was “apparently from suicide”, as he died by hanging.

Guards and medical staff intervened immediately to perform resuscitation, but it was too late, and he was pronounced dead by doctors.

The antivirus software pioneer was arrested at Barcelona airport in October 2020 just as he was about to board a flight to Istanbul.

He had been held in Spain since then.

The US filed an extradition request alleging that McAfee deliberately failed to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018.

If found guilty, he could have faced up to 30 years in prison.

The extradition request, however, hadn’t yet been approved by the Spanish Cabinet and could have been appealed.

Earned Over €10 million From 2014 to 2018, But Never Filed Tax Returns

According to the request, McAfee had earned more than €10 million (around S$16 million) from 2014 to 2018, but never filed a tax return.

It alleged that the 75-year-old ordered part of his income to be paid to straw men and placed the property in their names in order to conceal his assets.

A “Lover of Women, Adventure, & Mystery”

In the 2010s, McAfee found a new lease of life with cryptocurrency, claiming to make US$2,000 a day.

On his Twitter account, he described himself as a “lover of women, adventure and mystery”.

In a tweet just last week, McAfee acknowledged that the US authorities believed he had “hidden crypto”.

“I wish I did,” he said.

“My remaining assets are all seized. My friends evaporated through fear of association. I have nothing. Yet, I regret nothing.”

Three days before his death, his wife complained he was not doing well in jail, saying “the US authorities are determined to have John die in prison.”
