Having a birthday during the Covid-19 pandemic can be a depressing affair.
You can’t get sloshed at bars, you can’t have a large party, and unlike previous years, singing your heart out at KTV outlets while your friends laugh at you is now a distant dream.
Instead, all you’re allowed to do is invite five friends over and have them sing happy birthday while you cut into a suspiciously moist cake.

Fortunately, there’s one thing that will always put a smile on our face, even on our darkest days.
And the best thing about this thing is that it’s almost always available.
Reader: Friendship?
Ice cream.
Reader: Ah of course.
Whether you’re old, young, health-conscious or a greedy guzzler, you can’t deny the delights of ice cream.
Especially free ice cream.

A man who asked for a free sundae on his birthday got quite a shock when he actually received one as part of his delivery.

The happy birthday boy detailed the incident in a post on Reddit.
According to the man, he had ordered some food from McDonald’s via delivery and found this when the delivery driver handed him the bag:
It appears to be a Hot Fudge Sundae, which must have melted a little on its way to the man’s house.
Along with it was a note that read: “Happy Birthday to you Mr Tarquin” with a smiley face at the end.
Yes, McDonald’s had given the man a free sundae and a sweet little note as a birthday gift.

Redditors were impressed and touched by the fast-food chain’s gesture.
But, as one commenter asked, how did McDonald’s know?
Dad’s Secret Message
The man hadn’t actually informed McDonald’s that it was his birthday.
Unbeknownst to him, his father had included a little message to the fast-food chain when was ordering food for his son on his son’s account.
As the man explains:

“HAHAH my dad wrote “happy birthday to me” using my account and they did this without even verifying very nice guys n girls over there”.
Yup, the man’s dad simply wrote “happy birthday to me” and the man got a free sundae, without McDonald’s verifying if it was indeed his birthday.
I’m sure the fast-food chain will be receiving this message a lot more in the near future.
