Unless you’ve been living under a rock for the past year, you’d have heard of the Singaporean couple who got robbed in Bali.

It was Bali. Supposedly a destination of relaxation, fun and sunshine.

But it wasn’t, at least not for this Singaporean couple.

They got harassed not once, not twice but three times in a four-day trip.

The couple was kicked off their rented scooter and had a smartphone snatched by two men on a motorcycle.

Then, a man rode off with their rented scooter.

And to rub super-effective salt into the wound, the hotel sent men to the couple’s room to demand compensation for the lost scooter.

Thankfully, the couple had bought travel insurance for their trip so they were able to get back to Singapore safely.

The resort, La Vie Villa, had rubbished their claims and said they did not “threaten” the couple. They merely came to an agreement.

So you think, case closed, right? Nope.

They are 23-year-old Komang Joni alias Mang Ewes and 26-year-old I Wayan Adiasa alias Dayuh.

Joni was the snatcher while Adiasa drove the motorbike.

“It Went Viral on Social Media”

The couple’s story went viral in early May and several Indonesian news media outlets picked up the story. Fortunately for the couple, that seemed to be the deciding factor for the police.

Bali Police’s general crime director Sr. Comr. Andi Fairan said that they placed the case as the top priority because it has gone viral on social media.

They immediately checked the scene and established that the suspects were riding a black N Max scooter without helmets.

One Of Them Was Shot

It was added that one of the suspects was shot in the leg as he was trying to “resist arrest”.

The pair admitted that they sold the phone for S$209.

Mang Ewas had used the money to buy milk powder for his child and told the police officers that it was his first time stealing.

Tips On Staying Safe In Other Countries

Not everybody will get their story picked up by news media outlets, so here are a couple of tips you might want to pay attention to when travelling overseas:

  1. Try to travel in larger groups at night
  2. Don’t hold your valuables in your hand, keep them in your bag
  3. If possible, take a car instead of a scooter
  4. Always remember to buy travel insurance

And, of course, try and raise a scene on social media if nothing else works.Â
