The 21st century’s brought about many changes to life as we know it, with technology overpowering many basic functions that used to be rather simple.

No doubt that it’s aimed at making things even more simple, though – imagine machines parking your cars for you, easing your worries of finding a spot.

Still, accidents can happen even when you don’t need to park your own car.

Mercedes Overturned After Crashing Through Elevator

The aftermath of a Mercedes car crashing through an elevator door resulted in the car flipping over to lie on its side – with the driver still in there.

On 26 March, Friday, the owner of a black Mercedes had visited the Viva Vista Shopping Mall located along 3 South Buona Vista road.

There’s a rather unique parking system at this particular mall, though – it utilises a mechanical one, which requires cars to be driven into designated elevators and parked there.

According to reports, the 51-year-old driver had stopped in front of the elevator and pressed the button to call the lift to the ground floor.

Unfortunately, while the driver was waiting for the lift to arrive, the car suddenly lurched forward and crashed through the lift doors, resulting in the car partially sticking out into the elevator shaft.

Mr Lin, a 50-year-old shop attendant at the mall, recounted hearing a loud boom and seeing police cars and an ambulance rushing to the scene.

“I heard that when the Mercedes crashed into the elevator doors, the parking lot platform had yet to reach the bottom, causing the front of the Mercedes to fall approximately one floor down,” he said.

Mr Lin also added that the car had flipped on its side while being trapped in the elevator shaft, with the entire door crooked.

The driver was rescued from the overturned car with the help of hydraulic rescue equipment and was taken to the National University Hospital, unconscious after suffering injuries to the head.

No Problems With The System Until Now

Another shopkeeper, Mr Zeng, commented that he had been using the mall’s parking system for the past three years, and did not run into any problems thus far.

He said that he had not noticed any potential safety issues with the system, besides an instance where there was a minor service failure with the computer system.

This led him to believe that the accident occurred not because of the design or operational failure, but due to a human error.

According to the police, investigations are still underway, and the current state of the driver remains unknown.
