Lionel Messi Tested Positive for COVID-19 & Might Miss 2 Matches

As we all know, the rich and famous tend to get preferential treatment in life. Much like how chocolate cake will never be part of a healthy diet, this is one of those unfortunate facts of life that we can never change.

But COVID-19 does not give a hamster’s derrière who you are. It has infected all sorts of high-profile individuals, from politicians and tycoons to movie stars and athletes.

This time, the coronavirus has found its way into the arguably the best footballer of all time.

Cristiano Ronaldo: I tested positive for COVID-19 last year. You guys are a little late.

Uh… well this is awkward…

Lionel Messi Tested Positive for COVID-19 & Might Miss 2 Matches

Lionel Messi has tested positive for COVID-19, his club Paris Saint-Germain announced yesterday (2 Jan).

He is one of four PSG players to get infected with the virus, with the other three being:

  • Juan Bernat (Defender)
  • Sergio Rico (Goalkeeper)
  • Nathan Bitumazala (Midfielder)

All four players are in isolation and subject to the appropriate health protocols, PSG said. Their tests yielded positive results before a French Cup match against Vannes.

And it’s possible that Messi could also miss their next league game on 9 Jan against Olympique Lyonnais—one of the better teams in the league.

“Messi has been in regular contact with our medical team and when he has a negative test, he will travel to France but we don’t know any more than that. I don’t know if he will be involved against Lyon,” manager Mauricio Pochettino said.

“Until he gets a negative test in Argentina, he will not be able to travel to France. So it is all down to the test in terms of when he can travel… we will assess when he is ready to play.”

Not a Fairytale Beginning

Messi, now 34, spent 21 years of his life at Spanish club FC Barcelona before moving to PSG last year in a tranfer that shook the football world.

In his time in Spain, he scored 672 goals and won 35 trophies, including ten La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues.

He had to leave his boyhood club because Barcelona simply couldn’t afford to pay him—despite a reported agreement to a 50% pay cut.

Messi, often described as the best footballer of all time, has had a difficult start to his career at PSG, scoring only one goal in 11 league appearances. He has fared a little better in the Champions League, scoring five times.
