Do you have a messy room? Good news. Studies have shown that you’re…

Ever found yourself in the situation where you have to pack your room quickly in case mummy gets home and starts yelling at you; or there is simply not an inch of space left for you to sleep because of that pile of laundry you have stacked up since last week? You’re not alone.

Here, I have some good news for you! So, according to Elite Daily, the genius Albert Einstein had a desk that “looked like a spiteful ex-girlfriend had a mission to destroy his workspace”.

What in the world, right? Even the criticism is so chim but well, their point is that his desk was really, really messy, and didn’t look like it was comfortable or even suitable for doing any work. Of course, look at Albert Einstein himself. You and I probably first heard about him during Physics lesson thanks to the theories he came up with, and not because of his messy table.

The genius that he is, of course, had his chim response for all those criticisms thrown at him and asked in response, “If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, then what are we to think of an empty desk?” Well, I bet those critics were left dumbfounded after Einstein’s response.

Okay, so the story above might not be convincing enough for you. If that’s the case then let’s have a look at the conclusions gathered from a study:

A researcher at the University of Minnesota’s Carlson School of Management, Kathleen Vohs, and her colleagues carried out a series of experiments with 188 adults given tasks to choose from in both tidy and really messy spaces.

The findings concluded that messiness and creativity are very strongly correlated (yes, you’re most probably a creative person even though your room makes you look like an uninteresting slug), and that work spaces that are too clean might sometimes be an obstacle, ironically, that prevents the flow of inspiration.

Besides this research, a well-known test for creativity, the Torrance series, among many others is given to individuals with chronic disorganization.

And the results? These “problematic” people achieved very high scores in areas such as storytelling, unusual visualizations, humour, breaking normal boundaries, creativity, and a richness in the images that they form in their minds. Basically, they are more than just ordinary, boring people. And according to the authors of the test, such individuals who score high on the test battery are usually the ones with ideas for new products and services, and the ones who invent (like Steve Jobs, huh?).

So, if your desk is messy, not to worry. That being said, you might want to still clean up your bedroom a little bit just in case mummy starts yelling. And if your life is the messy one, well, I’m not sure how I can help–but maybe I would advise you to think positively–because “messy” means “Albert Einstein”, right? Righ… Maybe not.
