For most of us, we might associate shopping in Malaysia with loads of fun, low prices and having to lug loads of things back across the causeway afterwards.
But that’s not the case for this Singaporean man who ended up with a “souvenir” during his shopping spree in Malaysia.
And no, I’m not talking about those trinkets or keychains with Malaysia’s name or flag sprawled all over them.

Instead, this “souvenir” was an injury to his head after a metal bar dropped on him while happening.
Here’s what happened.
Man Was Shopping at Decathlon With Friend When Metal Bar Dropped on Him
When speaking to Shin Min Daily News, the victim’s friend, Mr Huang (Hanyu pinyin), recounted how he took a bus with his friend, a 54-year-old Mr Hu (Hanyu pinyin), from Singapore to Johor Bahru earlier this month on 15 February.
Mr Huang, 64, had intended to go shopping with his friend that day.
The pair were at City Square, a shopping mall in Johor Bahru, and were walking around the Decathlon store to look for things to buy (like most Singaporeans when they go to Malaysia).
And unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ll know that Decathlon is a sports goods retailer with stores worldwide, including Singapore.
However, disaster soon struck when a metal bar came down on Mr Hu at around 1.30 pm while the duo were in the store.
According to Mr Huang, he and Mr Hu were standing near the bag display racks when a black object suddenly fell from the sky and hit Mr Huang on the head.

The impact caused Mr Hu to fall to the ground immediately, and Mr Huang recalled hearing a loud noise when the item hit his friend on the head.
After the duo recovered from the initial shock, they realised that a metal bar had hit Mr Hu after coming loose from a rack.
According to Mr Huang, his friend started bleeding on the spot and complained of pain. He also said that he was terrified.
Mr Huang then described the bar, which was used to hang bags in the store, as around 40 cm long and said that it fell from a height of at least two metres.

No One Else Was Injured; Staff Came Forth to Render Assistance
Regarding the incident, Mr Huang shared that no one else was hurt.

He also commented that the weight of the metal bar and the speed at which it dropped onto Mr Hu’s head caused much damage and that the consequences would have been dire if a young child had been hit instead.
Apart from that, Mr Huang mentioned that a staff member in the store came forth to help the duo after the incident.
In particular, the staff member was able to stop his friend’s bleeding with a first-aid kit.
