In Dec 2018, Yakult Singapore made an earth-shattering revelation:

It will be removing straws from its products Yakult and Yakult Ace light from end-December 2018 onwards.

And while some applauded the environment-friendly direction, others called Yakult out for the simple fact that despite abolishing the straws, the bottles are still undeniably made of ‘plastic’.

But the one all-important question remained:

Which was promptly answered by the cultured milk brand:

“Yakult can be consumed directly from the bottle by removing the foil cap.”

But then again, let’s face it; we can all drink from the tin itself, but it’s just like eating a burger with knife and fork.

There is no feel-ing.

Metal Yakult Straws

If you’re someone who insists on ‘feelings’ when doing something, well, I’m sure you must’ve been aggrieved at Yakult’s impromptu decision.

“It just ain’t the same with no straw,” you cry. “Don’t cheat my feel-ings anymore!”

But hey, guess what? While Yakult’s not exactly gonna re-stock their supplies of straws anytime soon, there’s still an ample alternative:

Metal Yakult Straws.

See, after some Netizens suggested that kids legitimately needed straws to drink from the product…

…a website called The Last Straw took the opinions into account and pushed forth with actual metal straws for Yakult, to provide an option for those who can’t do without straws.

Measuring 11-cm long, each metal straw is packed with a 15-cm mini cleaning brush, and retails at S$4.90.

Which is more expensive than an entire pack of Yakult itself, for your information. One pack costs around S$3.20.

However, there’s an ongoing promotion, with the metal straw and cleaning brush coming in at S$2.90. Which is admittedly still pretty pricey, but hey at the very least it’s re-useable and everything.

Definitely worth it in the long run.

Incidentally, these straws are tested in local labs and are ascertained to be safe to use. So no worries about contracting salmonella or some indistinct bacteria from proactively using it.

Yakult isn’t the first one though

Before you bash Yakult for stepping all environmental-friendly, I’ll have to remind you that they’re not actually the first ones to break our straw-needy hearts.

Not even close.

As it is, a number of established eateries have since pledged their allegiance to the go-green movement, with straws sacrificed in the midst. These eateries happen to be

  • KFC
  • Burger King
  • Starbucks soon (which is such an irony considering it’s a chain that operates primarily on its drinks)

And with that in mind, I would say that it’s only fair game to expect more establishments to follow suit in the future. Although it would suck to not have a straw when drinking, it is for a good cause, and we’re technically collecting karma points while doing it.

So it ain’t that bad.

I guess.
