If you’ve been following up on American politics, you’ll realise the irony of the headline.
Before Donald Trump became the president of the United States, one of his campaign promise was to stop Mexicans from crossing into their country.
He blamed them for bringing economic and social problems into the US.
Even if you don’t remember that specifically, you’ll remember the famous wall that Donald Trump wanted to build.
Whelp, it seems that the situation has changed.
Mexico Now Wants America To Stay Away From Them
On 26 Mar 2020, BBC reported that the residents of Sonora, south of the US state of Arizona, has organised a blockade against traffic into the country.
They wore face masks and stood holding signs asking Americans to “stay at home”.
A checkpoint was shut down in the afternoon and they promised that they’ll do the same for the second day.
Little To No Enforcement
As for why they’re doing so? It’s because, they claimed, the authorities are not doing their jobs.
The border crossing is only supposed to be used for “essential business” but there was little enforcement on this.
In addition, there is also no health screenings conducted on people travelling into the country, according to Jose Luis Hernandez, a member of the rally.
So What Are Their Demands?
- To stop US or Mexican citizens who are crossing for tourism or medical reasons, including those who cross over daily to work or study
- Medical testing must be done on Mexicans deported from the US
Sounds reasonable, if you ask me.
The US Is Now The Worst Hit Country In The Entire World
As of 27 Mar 2020, the United States is now the worst-hit country in the entire world, even Italy and China.
The number of confirmed Covid-19 cases in the country has surged to 82,400.
Meanwhile, China had 81,782 cases while Italy has 80,589 cases.
In comparison, Mexico now has 475 cases, according to Johns Hopkins’ tally.

Meanwhile, President Trump is putting a plan together to try and lift social distancing measures in some states.
He and his team believed that the economic damage of the quarantine would be “far worse” than the virus itself.
He is calling to categorise the various states according to risk levels, and lift social distancing measures in states that are classified as “low-risk”.
