When someone wants to stop dating you and go out with someone else, there are two ways in which you can respond:
- Accept their decision and move on with your life
- Accept their decision and move on with your life
Yes, there’s really only one way.
But one man did the very opposite and pressured his girlfriend to end her relationship with the other man.
When she refused, he chose to kill her.
A Troubled Relationship
Ahmed Salim, a Bangladeshi painter, started dating his girlfriend, domestic worker Nurhidayati Wartono Surata, in May 2012 after a chance encounter.
According to The Straits Times, the couple decided to get married in December 2018.
However, unbeknownst to Ahmed, Nurhidayati started seeing another man, a Bangladeshi plumber, in mid-2018.
Suspecting infidelity, the 31-year-old confronted Nurhidayati and she admitted to dating another man.
Wanting to move on from Nurhidayati, Ahmed asked his mother to help him look for a wife. She managed to find one, and a wedding was scheduled for February.
However, a few months later, Ahmed and Nurhidayati made up and started dating again.
But the topic of her infidelity resurfaced, causing them to argue, which, on one occasion, led to Ahmed pressing a towel over her mouth while they were in a hotel room.
He only let go after she started struggling.
In late 2018, Nurhidayati began talking to a Bangladeshi general fitter on Facebook.
She later informed him of her relationship with Ahmed but promised to break it off.
Then, on 9 Dec, Nurhidayati followed through on this promise: she told Ahmed about her new boyfriend and said Ahmed should return to Bangladesh for his arranged marriage.
In a meeting on 23 Dec, she said she would continue dating Ahmed, but later broke up with him over a phone call.
Then, a week later, Ahmed convinced Nurhidayati to meet in a hotel, and they ended up having sex.
Strangled to Death
It was on this day that the gruesome murder took place.
Ahmed had repeatedly threatened to kill Nurhidayati if she didn’t break things off with her new boyfriend, but the 35-year-old Indonesian refused.
Furious, Ahmed brutally strangled Nurhidayati with a towel.
The 31-year-old had wrapped the towel around her neck, pushed her onto the bed, and stepped on one end of the towel while he tugged at the other.
Even after blood started flowing from the victim’s ears, Ahmed didn’t stop. In fact, he pulled even harder until Nurhidayati became motionless.
But he wasn’t done.
He tied a rope – which he had brought with him – around the victim’s neck several times and tightened it with a few knots.
He then twisted her head from left to right.
After the murder, Ahmed returned to his dormitory at Sungei Tengah Lodge, and handed around $1,000 to his roommate.
He admitted that he’d killed somebody, and instructed his roommate to remit the money to his family in Bangladesh.
Nurhidayati’s body was found at around 10.15pm that day by the hotel receptionist.
Ahmed was arrested the next day, at around 10.45am.
Sentenced to Death
Ahmed was sentenced to death on Monday (14 Dec) after he was found guilty of murder.
It was discovered that he had planned to murder Nurhidayati long before the fateful day, as long as she refused to leave her new boyfriend.
This was evidenced by the fact that he brought a rope to the hotel. He also cleared out his bank account earlier on the day of the murder.
Ahmed also admitted to this in a statement to police.
He said he had used a rope because it was easy to carry around.
Ahmed’s lawyers claimed their client had been provoked by Nurhidayati, who allegedly told him the other man was better than him financially and sexually.
They also said that his mental responsibility for the killing was minimized due to his adjustment disorder.
These arguments, however, didn’t hold water.
Nevertheless, Ahmed’s lawyers said their client is intending to appeal the court’s decision.
When asked by his lawyer about his mental state when talking to the police, Ahmed broke down, and said he knew he would be executed.
“I also want to be hanged. She has died and I also want to die. I don’t want to live. Everything is finished for me,” he said.
