Minibus Carrying 5 Children Injured Pedestrian & Crashed into Carpark Gantry at Chai Chee Avenue

Yesterday (10 May) afternoon, a minibus was driving a group of young children home when it crashed into a car park gantry at the open-air car park in front of Block 36 Chai Chee Avenue.

The incident, which occurred at around 12.25 pm yesterday (10 May), prompted many people in the area to take a closer look at what had happened.

In particular, a member of the public told Shin Min Daily News that the minibus was from the Asian Women’s Welfare Association AWWA, a social service organisation.

Shin Min reporters who reached the scene afterwards also noted that text indicating that the minibus was used to drive students with special needs was present on the bus itself.

Unfortunately, the accident injured an elderly pedestrian and caused her to lose a substantial amount of blood due to her injuries.

Pedestrian Was Unconscious After the Accident; Passers-by Helped Shield Her From the Sun

A bystander named Mario told Shin Min that an elderly lady was the pedestrian knocked down by the minibus driver.

According to him, the lady started bleeding profusely from her head and became unconscious while the driver of the minibus stood at the side of the scene.

A stallholder of the Malay stall at the nearby coffee shop also shared that the woman had just been to the coffee shop to have her lunch before the incident and that she lived in a nearby rental flat.

Apart from that, some residents in the area called for assistance from the nearby Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) clinic.

Personnel from the TCM clinic said that the lady was bleeding profusely, and it seemed like her injuries were severe.

Based on photos and videos taken by bystanders, a man went up and opened his umbrella to shield the lady from the sun after she had been knocked down.

After a while, several other members of the public came forth to show their concern and opened up their umbrellas too.

Children on the Bus Were Crying

On the other hand, the Malay stall stallholder added that there were five children in the minibus when the accident occurred.

The children, who looked like they were between the ages of four and five, were left in shock after the collision between their school bus and the pedestrian.

Those at the scene found out that the children were crying after some passers-by brought them out of the bus.

AWWA’s Response

When responding to queries from Shin Min, a spokesperson from AWWA clarified that the accident involved the private hire company that the organisation outsourced.

The spokesperson also highlighted that the driver is not an AWWA employee and that none of AWWA’s employees or students were left injured after the incident.

Apart from that, the AWWA spokesperson mentioned that AWWA will continue to monitor the conditions of those involved in the accident.

According to the spokesperson, AWWA heavily prioritises its employees and students’ safety.

The organisation will also do its best to assist with any investigations.
