Earlier this month, when it was announced that dining in would resume, cheers erupted all over Singapore.
Shortly after, when the authorities announced that we’d be able to return to the gyms for a workout, two gym bros said “yes, finally!” to each other, while the rest of the country pretended not to hear the announcement.
See, after a year or so of stuffing our faces while seated on the couch during “working hours” at home, exercising has become a chore, mostly something you reserve for next year’s New Year’s resolution.
But after watching this video, you might feel inclined to peel yourself off the sofa and head to the nearest gym.
Minister Shanmugam Made Yishun Great Again by Deadlifting 150% Of His Body Weight at the Gym
A video of a man deadlifting 150% of body weight at the gym is making the rounds on Facebook.
Typically, this wouldn’t make front-page news, but the man behind the bar was none other than Minister for Law and Home Affairs K. Shanmugam.
On Saturday (14 Aug), Mr Shanmugam shared a video of his latest workout at the gym, and netizens were impressed, to say the least.
“For slightly more than a year now, I have added weight training, to my exercise routine,” he wrote.
“After some months of training, (with Covid interruptions), I did a test to see what weight I can carry.”
A freaking large one, was the answer.
In the video, the Law Minister performs a deadlift, lifting those weights just like he lifts bad guys off the streets.
He progressively lifts heavier and heavier weights, starting with 80kg and going up to 105kg.
“…my body weight is 70kg, so 105 kg is 150 % of my body weight”, he wrote.
When he successfully lifts 105kg, everyone in the gym applauds.
The minister added that he’s going to attempt to deadlift 120 kg in the next few months, adding that the lady in the background in the video lifts that amount even though she only weighs 50 kg.
Meanwhile, the largest weight the rest of us residents carry is ourselves when we walk around. And I think that’s a tough enough workout.
Encouraged People to Exercise
After showing the country how he swole he is, Mr Shanmugam encouraged more people to exercise – “walk, go to the gym, swim, do something to move”, he said.
I feel personally attacked.
“And add weight training, for strengthening bones, other benefits. For older persons it helps reduce muscle loss. Good to have a varied routine,” he added.
He noted how exercise also helps keep you alert and makes you an efficient worker, in addition to keeping you fit.
“A healthy diet is also important,” he said.
Yes, it may be time to put away the bubble teas and get our butt to the gym. If our 62-year-old Law Minister can do it, then well, we have no excuse.
Reader: What about “I heard someone sneeze at the gym the last time I went”, is that a good enough excuse?
Ah yes, we can probably use that for the next three months.
