Some of you might remember earlier this year when Miss Universe Singapore 2020, Bernadette Belle Ong, made headlines for her memorable showing in the Miss Universe National Costume Show.
Wearing a flaming red bikini with a long, flowing cape in the colours of the Singapore flag, she sent the message that was printed on the cape loud and clear to the world: “Stop Asian Hate”.
Now, Miss Universe Singapore is back with its 2021 edition, and they’re looking for someone new to crown!
Miss Universe Singapore is Back, and They’re Going Digital!
In the press release for Miss Universe Singapore 2021 on Thursday (17 June), it was announced that this year’s competition would be going digital by “leveraging visual media and technology”.
The competition would also feature its first-ever “hybrid finals event”, with the Singapore finals projected to be held in September this year. However, no other details regarding how the competition is going to be held digitally have been announced till date.
I’m assuming that “hybrid” means the finals is going to be a mix of digital and in-person stuff?
New Management Team
This year, Miss Universe Singapore is going to be led by a new management team that aims to set itself apart by “innovating with the times”.
The new team is led by Jonas Antonio Gaffud, who has recently been appointed as Creative Consultant for the Miss Universe Philippines and Miss Universe Singapore brand. He was appointed by the Miss Universe Organisation, whose current headquarters is based in New York.
Comprising the team is also Valerie Lim, National Director and former Miss Universe Singapore 2011, as well as new Creative Fashion Director, Daniel Boey.
Ms Lim will be overseeing all aspects of the Organisation, including recruitment, training workshops, styling, content marketing and final competition planning.
“It was an honour to represent Singapore as Miss Universe Singapore a decade ago and I am delighted to be able to come full circle and help bring empowered Singaporean voices to a global stage. The Miss Universe platform is an opportunity for women from all walks of life to come together to inspire, discuss important issues, uplift and support each other beyond borders,” Ms Lim is quoted as saying in the press release.
As for Mr Boey, he is hailed as “Singapore’s fashion veteran and one of the most sought-after fashion and lifestyle curators in Asia” in the press release.
With an extensive portfolio spanning 31 years, Mr Boey’s industry experience as a fashion show producer is sure to be a big support to the team. He has been involved in some of the most well-known events internationally and worked with high-profile clients like Christian Dior, Louis Vuitton, Vera Wang, Loewe and more.
“As Miss Universe Singapore ups its ante each year and sees more Singaporean women pushing the boundaries of what it means to be a modern, empowered woman, I see this platform as a great opportunity to also bring to the forefront inclusivity, cultural-sensitivity and sustainability issues. I would also like to put the spotlight back on our local designers and artists and work with them to bring Singaporean creations onto the international stage,” said Mr Boey.
Miss Universe Singapore Now Open for Applications
Feeling like an empowered woman? Want to become Miss Universe Singapore?
Miss Universe Singapore 2021 is calling for participants and is open for applications!
So, who is eligible!
Firstly, applicants must be at least 18-years-old and not older than 27-years-old at the time of the Singapore competition.
And obviously, applicants have to be female. Unfortunately, applicants must also have never been married or have borne children.
All those married women and mothers out there, don’t take it to heart. Progression on gender stereotypes has only come so far, unfortunately.
Lastly, it wouldn’t be Miss Universe Singapore if it wasn’t Singaporeans participating! Applicants must be Singaporean, with a Singapore passport.
