Makeup. Where do I start?

The holy grail for the vast majority of women, makeup has dominated the female population for centuries and it’s no wonder why:

Blimey, that’s some serious transformation shit.

Yet, as aesthetically pleasing and confidence-boosting as make-up can be, the fact remains that just like guilt, you gotta wash it off properly.

“But why?” you ask. “What’s gonna happen?”

In response, I quote the following article headline:

Mites Lived in Lady’s Eyelash Follicles Cuz She Didn’t Remove Her Makeup Properly

A fan of mites? Well, I think we’ve found a way to get them into your eyelash follicles as pets.

According to Oriental Daily, a 32-year-old woman from Hubei Province, China, had experienced itchy and dry eyes with her eyelashes dropping off in the last six months.

Naturally, she headed to the doctor for a check, only to discover some pretty shocking stuff:

There were freaking mites camping in her eyelashes.

A large number of mites

After examining the woman’s eyelashes under a microscope, the doctor discovered multiple mites crawling around at the root of her eyelashes, where the meibomian glands are.

The doctor then asked her whether she was required to wear makeup at work. At this point, he suspected that she had neglected to remove her makeup properly because of work pressure and an irregular work schedule.

This would certainly align with the woman’s own claims too, who professed to have had dry and itchy eyes for the last six months.

“It is no wonder that in the past six months, my eyes have always felt dry and itchy, and I often have eyelashes falling off,” the woman said.

She was subsequently advised to (thoroughly) remove her makeup each time she wears it, in a bid to reduce the chances of mites growing to an abnormal amount. Should the condition get worse and if it’s not treated in time, it will take a long time to recover.

Mite party

Be warned though. Mites aren’t just exclusive to makeup-proficient girls.

According to Health Line, these mites are called Demodex mites, and they prey on dead skin cells in your hair follicles. And get this, everyone has small amounts of these mites. It’s just that the mites usually only become problematic in large quantities.

In severe cases, it could actually lead to eye lesions, a benign growth on the eye. Also, improper removal of makeup can result in a series of eye diseases like blepharitis and conjunctivitis.

Moral of the story

So ladies (and gentlemen), do yourself and everyone a favour:

Remove your makeup properly.

After all, unless you love these critters as pets…

You probably don’t want them in your eyelash follicles.
