Yesterday, it was announced that children between 5 to 11 would be able to take the COVID-19 vaccines soon.

However, they would only be allowed to take the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine, and it won’t be similar to the ones we adults take: instead, it will just be one-third of the dose, with the same interval of 21 days.

Would we run out of  Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine doses then?

Well, it doesn’t appear so, but it’s confirmed that we currently have more Moderna doses than the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty doses at this moment.

This afternoon, Health Minister Ong Ye Kung gave an update on Facebook about the vaccine situation in the next two months.

After repeating what MOH has said yesterday in their media releases, which you can read here, he also provided some new information pertaining to the vaccine programme in Singapore.

For a start, Singapore is expected to “administer over two million doses of vaccines over two months in Dec 2021 and Jan 2022.”

He highlighted the importance the vaccine, saying that this will “help us prepare for the emergence of Omicron variant in Singapore. Preliminary studies have shown that it is more transmissible than Delta. Hence, it will be a matter of time before it establishes itself all over the world, and even overtake Delta as the dominant variant.”

But…based on current data, doesn’t the Omicron cause milder symptoms, which is why it’s actually goody?

You can watch this video to the end to understand that logic:

Mr Ong acknowledged that, but did not dismiss the the risk of Omicron. He said, “Initial indications are that Omicron infections cause milder symptoms. However, because of the potentially large base of infections due to high transmissibility, even a small proportion of people falling very sick can put our healthcare system under severe pressure.”

In his Facebook post, he also mentioned that “until we receive more deliveries in Jan 2022, we have more Moderna stocks than Pfizer/BioNTech. Hence for Moderna centres, you can just walk in and there is no need to book an appointment.”

This is for people taking their booster shots, whereby you can take the Moderna vaccine even if you’ve taken the Pfizer-BioNTech/Comirnaty vaccine for your first two shots.

And of course, it’s also for people who’ve not taken their first dose, which I probably think won’t be reading this article.

To know more about booster shots (in general), watch this to the end:
