If you’ve been on Facebook recently, you’d have seen the viral video of a mother kicking a daughter on the street.
And you might be wondering: “What’s with the mom?”
If you’re one who doesn’t log in to Facebook because the social media platform is as messy as your room, here’s the video that can’t be embedded because Facebook has deemed it to be too violent (note: it could be rather disturbing for some of you).

Because the video has been re-uploaded by many other Facebook Pages, we can’t put a figure to the number of combined video views, but judging from the number of media reports about it, it should be in the millions range.
Basically, in the video, the mother was seen kicking the toddler’s butt angrily as the mother and a guy (presumably the father) filmed the toddler putting down a bag.
Turns out this happened on 6 April 2019 (or 8 April 2019, depending on which media report you read), and that the daughter is a model girl and the parents were using her as a…pay cheque.
And the amount is shocking. Read on and you’ll understand.
Daughter an Online Store Model
If you’re a Taobao regular, you’d have seen beautifully taken images of the products or clothing together with a pretty face.
Well, these models might not be working for the seller but merely modelling for them; just like three-year-old Niu Niu.
According to reports, Niu Niu is (was) a child model for several online stores for six months. When the incident occurred, Niu Niu was alleged to have been overworked.
After the video went viral in Weibo (sort of like Twitter in China), all the online stores associated with Niu Niu removed all images and videos that starred Niu Niu. In addition, online stores also started to advocate for child model welfare (never waste a crisis, indeed).

So, why had the mother kicked her cash-cow employee daughter?
Mom Responded Online
On 10 April 2019, the mother posted a response on Weibo, apologising for the incident but claimed that she won’t have harmed her daughter because…she’s her daughter.
In an interview, she claimed that it doesn’t make sense for anyone to hit his or her child – she had hit her because it was getting dark and Niu Niu was moving towards the road. She went “panicky” and therefore kicked her.
She defended herself excessively, claiming that they had filmed in the studio prior to that and had done the outdoor shot only when the sun was weaker.
However…

Netizens Found Other Footage of Mom Abusing Niu NIu
Somehow, people in Weibo posted more footage of the mother abusing Niu Niu during photoshoots.
In a video, she was seen hitting a crying Niu Niu with a hanger.
In another, Niu Niu was looking at her fingers when someone (presumably the mother) hit her hand. Niu Niu immediately smiled to the front as if knowing that it was a cue for her to start filming.
These videos are in Weibo so we can’t embed them, but you get the gist.
Online Store Owner and Photographer Related Their Experience
To add fuel to the fire, an online store owner, who has worked with Niu NIu, claimed that Niu Niu has been forced to do a lot of jobs by her mother,

A photographer who’s once worked with Niu Niu alleged that Niu Niu had been punched on the back because she was too tired and couldn’t keep her back straight.
Why? ‘Coz It’s Good Money
The abuses came at a high cost, it seems.
In a report, it’s stated that a child model like Niu Niu can earn up to…SGD$1,900 per day.
Now, imagine Niu Niu working 31 days a month. That’s over $50,000 a month.
And all the money goes to her parents.
So next time, when you’re in Taobao, remember this: those pretty faces you see there, they could be millionaires…at a high cost.
