There’s a reason why the use of plastic bags have increasingly been discouraged all over the world. Still, the world has a long way to go before we become plastic-free.
That said, we have slowly taken baby steps by cutting out plastic straws. Some stores have also started to stop giving out plastic bags.
For example, according to a minister, some major Thai stores will stop giving out plastic bags by 2020 to reduce plastic waste.

But if we are ever in need of a reminder of why reducing plastic waste is imperative, here’s a tragic story for you:
Monkey Suffocates & Drowns After Getting Head Stuck In Plastic Bag At Thai Beach
Warning: If you’re squeamish, stop reading this article here. The details and pictures that follow may be disturbing to some.
On 16 November 2019, a man from Thailand took to Facebook to share a picture of a dead monkey on a Thai beach.
It was around 4pm when he made a grisly find at a beach in Khao Sam Muk, Thailand.
He was taking a stroll along the beach when he saw a strange-looking ‘stone’. To his horror, it wasn’t a stone but was actually a dead monkey in a plastic bag.
Take a closer look and you’ll soon realise that the poor monkey is bleeding from its nose.
Not bearing to leave the monkey in the bag, he brought the animal away from the water and removed the plastic bag that was wrapped around the top half of the poor monkey’s body.
To make matters worse, there was blood on the inside of the plastic bag as the monkey bled from its nose while it presumably suffocated and drowned in the water.

The poor animal must have really struggled.
Anyone who came across such a grisly find would be at a loss at what to do, like this man was.
At last, he decided to bring the monkey further away from the water.
He also wishes to remind people not to feed monkeys, especially from plastic bags as they become accustomed to putting their heads inside the bags to try to find food.
What happened is truly tragic and serves as a reminder for us to stop using or at least cut down on the use of plastic bags.
