Singaporean actor, comedian, and television host Moses Lim, best known for his iconic role as Tan Ah Teck in the sitcom Under One Roof, passed away on 11 February 2025, at the age of 75.

His death was announced on his official Facebook page, with a tribute stating, “Today, Singapore celebrates the extraordinary life of one of our most beloved entertainment icons. Moses Lim, who brought endless laughter and joy to generations of Singaporeans, has taken his final bow, leaving behind a legacy that sparkles as brightly as his unforgettable smile.”

Who is Moses Lim?

Most people born after the 80s would know Moses Lim.

Born on 13 December 1949 in Singapore, Lim was the third of twelve children in a family of Henghua dialect speakers.

He attended Catholic High School for his primary education, Maris Stella High School for his secondary education, and completed his pre-university studies at Anglican High School.

He later studied commerce at Ngee Ann Polytechnic. Lim was multilingual, fluent in English, Mandarin, Malay, and several Chinese dialects, including Puxian Min, which he spoke at home.

HIs foray into the entertainment industry began in 1994 when he left his previous endeavours to participate in the Singaporean sitcom “Under One Roof.”

Portraying the character Tan Ah Teck, a portly and affable minimart owner, Lim became a household name.

The show was groundbreaking as it was the first locally produced English-language sitcom in Singapore and gained international recognition.

Lim’s catchphrase, “This reminds me of a story,” became synonymous with his character.

For his performance, he became the first Singaporean actor to win the Best Male Actor in a Comedy award at the Asian Television Awards in 1996.

Beyond Under One Roof, Lim co-hosted the popular comedy show Comedy Nite alongside Jack Neo.

He also appeared in films such as Just Follow Law (2007) and Our Sister Mambo (2015).

Health Challenges

In 2018, Lim underwent heart surgery that led to complications, resulting in a three-month recovery period during which he relied on a crutch for mobility.

In 2022, he was diagnosed with a slow pulse rate and was advised to implant a pacemaker.

Due to previous complications, Lim declined the procedure.

A subsequent review six months later revealed that his condition had stabilized, and his doctor agreed with the decision to forgo the pacemaker.
